Alumni Association Seeks Nominations for Awards

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus State University’s Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its most prestigious awards, honoring two former presidents.

Feb. 19 is the deadline for nominations for both the Frank D. Brown Achievement and Leadership Excellence Award and the Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award.

“The easiest way to distinguish between the two awards,” said Ray Lakes, executive director of the CSU Alumni Association, “is the Whitley Award nominee must be a CSU graduate. Everyone else who brings distinction to or who provides outstanding service to CSU is eligible to be nominated for the Brown Award.”

The CSU Alumni Association established the Frank D. Brown Achievement and Leadership Excellence Award honoring CSU’s third president in 2008, the year he retired, to recognize an individual or organization that exemplifies his leadership skills and ideals. “Dr. Brown is respected throughout the Columbus region as an outstanding servant leader and for fostering and promoting community collaboration and partnerships in the areas of education, culture and economic development,” Lakes said.

Those eligible to receive the award include any active or retired staffer or faculty member, anyone who attended Columbus College or Columbus State University but did not receive a degree, or a CSU supporter or supporting organization that’s made extraordinary contributions to educational excellence at Columbus State or whose achievement has brought honor and distinction to the university.

The Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award, named after CSU's founding president, is presented each year to the CSU or Columbus College degree-holder who has most lived up to the high standards set by the award's namesake, who died in 2001. Approved in 1980 by CSU's alumni board, this prestigious award is given annually to a CSU graduate.

Both awards are presented only when extraordinary achievement or service merits them. The awards will be presented at CSU’s annual President’s Recognition Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22 in the Cunningham Center.

Criteria for each award and nomination forms can be found at http://alumni.colstate.edu. Deadline for both awards is 5 p.m. (Eastern), Friday, Feb. 19. Questions and requests for additional information should be directed to the Alumni Office at telephone number 706-568-2280.
