Columbus-born Carson McCullers Next Featured Author for Oprah

The next title in Oprah Winfreys book of the month club is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers, the Columbus-born author whose childhood home is now a Columbus State University center.

Winfrey made the announcement on her show on Wednesday, propelling the author and her signature book in the national spotlight. Previous books selected by Oprah for the book club have meant a sales and popularity boom almost overnight.

The selection of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, for Oprahs attention could mean some more attention for Columbus State University's Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, located in the Smith-McCullers House, Carson McCullers' childhood home, in Columbus.

The Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Carson McCullers, to nurturing American writers and musicians, to educating young people and to fostering the literary and musical life of Columbus, the state of Georgia, and the American South. To that end, the center operates a museum in McCullers' childhood home in Columbus, Georgia and presents educational and cultural programs for the community.
