Columbus State Focuses on Outreach Centers for Georgia Gives Day

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus State University is joining organizations around the state to participate in Georgia Gives Day on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The statewide initiative asks citizens to donate money to causes they care about locally and across the state. Georgia Gives Day is a collaboration of the Georgia Center for Nonprofits in partnership with participating nonprofits, state agencies, corporations and businesses, associations, foundations, and public relations and advertising firms.

Columbus State is hoping the community helps it raise $3,000 to support three outreach centers: Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, Coca-Cola Space Science Center and the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians. The centers all extend CSU's reputation as a teaching university, offering learning opportunities for students as well as the public. Each center seeks  $1,000 to support the following projects:

  • Oxbow Meadows: An interactive, educational gopher tortoise exhibit, which would be open to the public, school groups and other environmental observers

  • Coca-Cola Space Science Center: Public observatory programs that also provide a significant platform for CSU student research efforts.

  • McCullers Center: Membership in the Georgia Poetry Circuit, an organization that brings three world-renowned poets to speak and read at the center each year. These readings, free and open to the public, give the community an opportunity to engage in discussions with and listen to readings by established poets.
