Columbus State Men’s Lacrosse Wins First Official Game

Charleston, SC – Columbus State’s Men’s Club Lacrosse team won their first game in program history against host The Citadel, 11-10, in double overtime on Sunday, Jan. 25. With the win, the Cougars improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs opened up scoring for the game before the Cougars answered back with two goals from freshman midfielder Chase Rogers (Archer H.S). The Bulldogs scored the only other goal of the quarter to even up the score at 2-2.

The Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 3-1 in the second quarter, with the lone goal for the Cougars coming from freshman midfielder Jack Spanjers (Norcross H.S). Going into halftime, the Cougars trailed The Citadel 5-3.

The Citadel’s lead grew in the third quarter as they outscored Columbus State 4-2. The scoring for the Cougars came from freshman midfielder Ashton Waites (McEachern H.S) and senior attacker Nicholas Capano (Dominican College, Troy H.S).

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars pushed back against the Citadel, outscoring them 5-1, to tie the game at 10-10 and force overtime. The Cougars then received three goals from freshman attacker Tommy Staebler (McEachern H.S) and a goal apiece from Waites and Capano.

Each team saw some great scoring opportunities during the first overtime period but neither could find the back of the cage to finish the game. The Cougars hit in the second overtime on a goal by Staebler to close the game out at 11-10.

Staebler (four goals, one assist) and Capano (two goals, three assists) led the Cougars each with five points, while Rogers (two goals, one assist) and fellow freshman midfielder Kyle Martin (three assists) each finished with three points. Spanjers (one goal, one assist) and Waites (two goals) finished with two points each, and Jabin Stepp (Buford H.S) rounded out the scoring with one assist. Goalie Chris Briner (Grayson H.S) tallied 15 saves in cage.

Next up, the Cougars host Alabama on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at CSU’s Walden Soccer Complex.
