Columbus State Names new Dean of Libraries

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus State University has hired a new leader for its library system.

Mark W. Flynn, director of the Florida Electronic Library and information technology programs for the Florida Division of Library and Information Services, will become dean of CSU Libraries on Sept. 12.

“This is an exciting move for me,” said Flynn, who, in his current position since 2003, has provided reference and research assistance for Florida public library patrons. “I'm looking forward to guiding CSU Libraries in line with the university's overall plan.”

Mark FlynnFlynn arrives from Tallahassee, where he earlier worked for the State Library of Florida. He started as library services supervisor in 1991, advanced to library program administrator in 1992 and became library management analyst in 1994.

Tom Hackett, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Flynn brings ideal qualities to Columbus State and the dean's position. “Mark Flynn has a reputation as a leader in the library field, one whose expertise in the field, passion for learning, and knowledge of emerging technologies is balanced by his collaborative approach in working with people.”

Flynn, who has published several academic papers related to library technology, previously served in university library settings. He was as an assistant science librarian at Florida State University, head of special collections and archives for George Mason University and collection development librarian for Loyola University in New Orleans.

He holds an education specialist degree in library science from the University of Alabama, a master’s in archives administration and records management from the University of New Orleans, a master’s in library science from the University of Alabama and bachelor’s degrees in philosophy, English and fine arts from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala.

Flynn’s arrival means interim director Roberta Ford resumes her post as assistant dean of libraries and music librarian for the CSU Music Library.

Ford has served as interim dean since spring 2010, when she succeeded Callie McGinnis, who retired..

A CSU Libraries branch, the Music Library is part of the university’s Saunders Center for Music Studies, serving the Schwob School of Music.

On main campus, the Simon Schwob Memorial Library is CSU Libraries’ headquarters and houses the university Archives.
