Columbus State to Hold Summer, Fall Orientation Sessions at Fort Benning

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- For just the second time, Columbus State will hold an orientation at Fort Benning for new students.

The Monday, June 6 event reflects the university’s renewed and nationally recognized commitment to helping those in military service transition to civilian life by earning a college degree. CSU’s first orientation at Fort Benning was last spring. Orientation on post for fall classes is Aug. 2.

The next session is for new freshmen, or students with less than 30 credit hours, who will take classes this summer, June 13-July 28, at Fort Benning.

Check-in is 5-6 p.m. followed by a 6-8 p.m. presentation, plus student advisement and course registration – all in CSU’s Fort Benning center in Building 2611 at Soldiers Plaza.

While CSU orientations typically require a fee, participation in the Fort Benning session is cost-free.

The fee waiver reflects CSU’s status as a Military Friendly School, according to G.I. Jobs magazine. The yearly list reflects the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace U.S. veterans as students.

Columbus State also is instrumental in “Soldiers 2 Scholars,” a recently beefed-up University System of Georgia program to attract and retain military students.

Columbus State has used the grant-supported program to boost its service to, and connection with, Fort Benning, veterans and the military community. Results include an expanded array of online courses targeting the military, a beefed-up Veterans Affairs office, additional classroom space near Fort Benning at CSU’s Oxbow Meadows, and academic credit toward a master’s in public administration (government track) or a master’s of educational leadership for soldiers who complete the Maneuver Captains’ Career Course at Fort Benning.

Those planning to attend the June 6 orientation should bring any required documents for admission they have yet to submit, such as final transcripts

Other Columbus State orientation dates for summer classes are June 7 at 6 p.m. at CSU’s West Point Center and daylong on June 8 on main campus. These sessions include a fee.
