CSU Adds Aquatic Center to Student Recreation Facility Plan

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State University has added an aquatic center to plans for a state-of-the-art recreation center that will be a major hub for student life on main campus.

The 26,000-square foot, $8 million aquatic center will feature both fitness — a six-or-eight-lane, 25-yard-long pool with a one-meter diving board — and social components: a leisure pool with slides and adaptable for water volleyball, a “lazy river,” a 20-30-person hot tub and an adjacent outdoor sundeck.

CSU’s Student Government Association voted unanimously to approve the addition to make it now a 96,000-square foot, $28 million student recreation center, which will be paid for through student fees.

Students who pay the $125 per semester fee (about $6.50 per week) during the construction phase between fall 2009 and spring 2011 will earn eight months of post-graduation access to the facility for each semester of paid fees.

Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Darryl Holloman said the aquatic center has added to an already highly anticipated milestone for the university. “We are extremely excited about this opportunity to provide this level of a campus experience that will help us recruit and retain students.”

In addition to the aquatic center, the facility will house a general fitness area; a women’s-only fitness area; two basketball courts; three volleyball courts; two racquetball courts; a multi-purpose court to accommodate indoor soccer, rollerblade hockey and volleyball; an indoor walking-running track; a ballroom; gameroom; lounge area; retail space; aerobic rooms; locker rooms, and student activity and government offices.

The center also will expand and centralize CSU’s student recreation options currently available in the Davidson Student Center, Woodruff Gym and adjacent Health and Safety Center.

The main-campus location will be determined after the university hires an architect for the project in January. A groundbreaking ceremony is projected for August 2009 with a grand opening 18-24 months later.
