CSU Alumni Association Seeks Award Nominations

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Nominations are now being accepted for two of Columbus State University's most prestigious awards, both honoring former presidents.

The Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award, honoring Columbus College's founding leader, has been awarded since 1980, but this will be the inaugural year of the Frank D. Brown Achievement and Leadership Award, which is open to any individual or organization that supports CSU. March 18 is the nominations deadline for both awards.

Columbus State's Alumni Association established the Brown award in 2008, recognizing the 20 years of leadership offered by the university's third president, who retired last June.

'Dr. Brown is respected throughout the Columbus region as an outstanding servant leader and for fostering and promoting community collaboration and partnerships in the areas of education, culture and economic development,' said Ray Lakes, CSU's executive director of the Alumni Association. 'The association felt it was important to recognize that leadership and those ideals.'

Those eligible to receive the Brown award include any organization or individual supporter of Columbus State (other than a CSU graduate) who has made extraordinary contributions to educational excellence at the university or whose achievement has brought honor and distinction to the institution. A nomination form and more information on the award can be accessed by visiting http://alumni.colstate.edu/brownaward.asp.

The Thomas Y. Whitley Distinguished Alumnus Award, also established by the CSU Alumni Association, is presented each year to a CSU graduate who has most lived up to the high standards of the award's namesake. A nomination form and more information on the award can be accessed by visiting http://alumni.colstate.edu/whitley.asp.

Both awards are presented only when extraordinary achievement or service merits them. Presentation of the awards will be made at the President's Recognition Banquet, which will be held on April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in CSU's Cunningham Center.

The deadline for nominations to be received for both awards is 5 p.m. March 18. Obtain paper nomination forms and additional information by calling CSU's Alumni Office at 706-568-2280.
