CSU Cheerleaders Claim National Title
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Columbus State University's Small Coed cheer squad Saturday claimed the 2008 Universal Cheerleaders Association Division II National Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The title is the third in the last four tries for coach Jimbo Davis and his squad after a third-place finish in 2007.
CSU drew the coveted seventh performance position in the finals, meaning they were able to watch the routines of each of the other competitors before going on. The Cougar squad stuck its routine to bring home the title, finishing ahead of Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky. Alabama-Huntsville was fourth, followed by Evangel, Missouri Valley, and Tusculum.
In the Large Coed cheer squad competition, CSU again drew the seventh performance spot but was unable to overcome a strong performance by West Georgia. CSU finished as runners-up, making it eight years in a row that the squad has finished in the top three. CSU finished third in 2007 and was hoping to break through for its first title in the large division. Northwest Missouri State was third, followed by Slippery Rock, Indiana Wesleyan, Puerto Rico-Bayamon and Pittsburgh State.
