CSU Community Is Aiding In Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
In response to the overwhelming needs faced by those who have been displaced by hurricane Katrina, the students, faculty and staff of Columbus State University have established a campuswide relief fund.
In addition to a fund-raising effort, the university is preparing to accommodate enrollment-seeking college students from campuses in hurricane-affected areas. Eight students already have contacted CSU requesting assistance with more calls expected this week.
These are extraordinary times and the events surrounding hurricane Katrina are unprecedented, said CSU president Frank Brown. It is our conviction that CSU must do all that we can to help.
In accordance with University System of Georgia Board Of Regents guidelines, CSU will provide the following for students of institutions in areas affected by Katrina:
Waiver of out of state tuition through fall semester 2006
Deferred fall semester tuition payments
Deferred room and board charges for housing
Deferred documentation of immunization
Additional fund-raising efforts by CSU students, faculty and staff are underway or planned according to the following:
Cash donation boxes have been set up around campus to accept individual donations
The Schwob library is collecting canned goods to be sent to the local shelter of the Red Cross.
The campus bookstores parent company, Follett, is collecting relief funds
Donations are being accepted during CSU athletic events, such as matches at the new CSU Soccer Complex
A CSU Yard Sale and Silent Auction will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Lumpkin Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All money will go to the Red Cross for relief efforts.
We need donations from students, faculty and staff! Drop off your furniture, household items, clean clothes, etc at the Lumpkin Center between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. starting on Monday (9/12). Ask Jimbo Davis or Mike Greene for assistance.
Volunteers are also needed to help sort the items and staff the sale. If interested, please contact Jimbo Davis at davis_james@ColumbusState.edu or 568-2317 or 593-2761.
All proceeds from CSUs relief effort will go to the Red Cross with the stipulation they be specifically used to aid those who have been affected by hurricane Katrina.
