CSU Happenings for Aug. 18-22

AUG. 18 – Sci-Fi Under The Stars Double Feature
CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center on Saturday will screen both “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” (1956) and “The War of the Worlds” (1953) on the center’s south lawn. The latter is the original film adaptation, starring Gene Barry, of the H.G. Wells story told on radio of the invasion of Earth by Martians. AUG. 19 - Freshman Convocation to Feature Successful Grad
CSU will hold its 2007 Freshman Convocation at 4 p.m. Sunday in Fine Arts Hall. This year’s freshman class will join CSU faculty and staff for the event, introduced in 2005 to formally welcome new students and convey the significance of their educational endeavor and the university’s commitment to support students in achieving their goals.

The keynote speaker is Mary Hill Johnson, a 2003 biology graduate, now pursuing a doctorate in forest resources with an emphasis in wildlife ecology at the University of Georgia. The hour-long ceremony also will feature remarks from CSU President Frank Brown, Vice President of Academic Affairs George Stanton, Vice President of Student Affairs Gina Sheeks, Criminal Justice Associate Professor and CSU Educator of the Year Dorinda Dowis, University College Dean Beverly Davis and Student Government Association President Alex Acton. AUG. 20 - Faculty Guitar Recital
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a recital by faculty guitarist Andrew Zohn at 7:30 p.m. Monday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Zohn has earned prizes in five national and international competitions including the Guitar Foundation of America and the Stotsenberg International. Admission is free. AUG. 22 - Students to Stage ‘Back to School Bash’
CSU’s Student Life division will host a “Back to School Bash” from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Y. Whitley Clock Tower. A campus tradition, the event features food, inflatable games and student organization displays and is designed to bring together CSU students, faculty and staff to celebrate the beginning of fall semester.
