FEB. 1-2 — CSU Softball

Columbus State’s softball squad kicks off its season with doubleheaders at the Peach Belt Conference-Sunshine State Conference Softball Challenge Saturday and Sunday at the South Commons Complex (400 4th Street). In the opener at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, CSU plays Lynn University. The Lady Cougars return for a 4 p.m. contest vs. St. Leo. CSU returns at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 for a matchup vs. St. Leo, and closes out the weekend at 2 p.m. vs. Rollins. FEB. 1-2 — CSU Theatre: Stop Kiss

Columbus State’s Theatre Department is producing the play Stop Kiss at the Riverside Theatre at  7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. Stop Kiss offers a heartbreaking, tenderly comic, sometimes vicious reflection on the pain that can come from trying to be who we really are. This production is not recommended for children due to adult content and mature themes. Admission $17, $15 for ages 60 and older, CSU alumni and active military. FEB. 1 — Gusto!

Gusto!, an evening of fine dining and music, in multiple styles performed by students  from Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 in the lobby of the National Infantry Museum. This year’s Gusto! FEB. 2 — Faculty Piano Concert

FEB. 3 — Poet Talk, Reading at McCullers Center, Main Campus

Andrew Hudgins, author of nine books of poetry, will give a talk at CSU’s Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, 1519 Stark Ave.,at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. Hudgins, a finalist for the 1985 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, will follow that with a formal reading at 7:30 p.m. at CSU’s Center for Commerce and Technology  Auditorium as part of the Georgia Poetry Circuit. FEB. 3 — Visiting Clarinetist Concert

Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music hosts a concert by Canadian clarinetist Jana Starling at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Accompanied by faculty pianist Yien Wang, it will be a recital of diverse character and international flair featuring classic and unique works for clarinet and piano. Free. FEB. 9 — Kobrin, Schwartz and Warner Concert

Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music hosts a faculty concert by pianist Alexander Kobrin, violinist Sergiu Schwartz and cellist Wendy Warner at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The trio will perform two chamber music masterworks, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A Minor and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor. Free. FEB. 18 — Film: Slavery by Another Name

CSU’s Department of History and Geography will screen the film Slavery by Another Name, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the Columbus Public Library auditorium (3000 Macon Road). The 2012 documentary focuses on forms of forced labor that kept thousands of African-Americans in bondage until World War II. The film is part of Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle, a program made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. FEB. 20 — CSU Wind Orchestra Concert

Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music hosts a performance by its Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The performance, a journey "Around the Globe": a fanfare for Mother Earth, a Greek symphony, an Italian aria, and a Mexican dance all commingle with Persichetti’s masterwork for for band, Symphony No. 6, conducted by CSU’s head of Instrumental Music Education, Sean Powell.
