CSU Happenings for May 2013

MAY 4 – Poetry and Guitar at McCullers Center
Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will host an evening with CSU Poetry and Guitar students at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4 at the center, 1519 Stark Ave. The evening will combine the works of students in a class taught by English professor Nick Norwood with the music of guitar students of Schwob School of Music professor Andrew Zohn. Free.

May 6 – Spring Commencement Ceremony
CSU will hold its spring commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6 at the Columbus Civic Center. Dink NeSmith, University System of Georgia Board of Regents chairman, will deliver the commencement address. Dan Amos, Aflac CEO, will be awarded an honorary doctorate. MAY 7 – Wildlife Explorers: Flower Power
Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center presents Wildlife Explorers: Flower Power at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 7 at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. Participants will design their own flower pot, plant the seed and watch it grow from home. Children will also have the opportunity to explore the outdoors in search of a variety of Oxbow flowers. Admission is $10 for one child and one adult, and $5 per additional child or adult. Infants get in free. At least one adult must be present per three children. May 7 – Student Horn Recital
CSU's Schwob School of Music hosts a student horn recital at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Bowen Dungan, a student of faculty artist Anna Dodd, will perform the recital. Free. For more information, call 706-649-7225 or visit http://ColumbusState.edu/music.

MAY 11 – Oxbow Public Grand Opening: Audubon Bird Park
Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will hold the public grand opening for the Columbus Audubon Association's Bird Park from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. Visitors to this newest addition to the Oxbow Meadows gardens will enjoy a day full of bird-related activities. May 13 – Reading with poet Susanna Lang
Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians presents an evening with poet Susanna Lang at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 13 at the center, 1519 Stark Ave. Lang is the author of three books of poetry and has translated the poetry of Yves Bonnefoy, a French poet and essayist. Her first collection of poems, Even Now, was published by The Backwaters Press in 2008, and her chapbook, Two by Two, came out with Finishing Line Press in 2011. A full-length collection, Tracing the Lines, is forthcoming from Brick Road Poetry Press this spring. Free.
