CSU Student Awarded Gilman Award

Columbus State University student Shayla Foston has been awarded with the Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship. Foston will be using the scholarship to support her study abroad in Japan during the Fall Semester.

"The Gilman Scholarship is a nationally competitive program. Shayla has risen to the challenge of the scholarship competition,” said Dr. Spears. “CSU is proud of her accomplishment and wishes her success at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan." Foston added, "To say that I am excited would simply be an understatement; but if I had to narrow down all that I am going to encounter while in Japan, I believe that I become the most captivated when just thinking about being immersed within a new culture and language. I know these experiences will last with me for a lifetime."

The award is a scholarship provided by the US Department of State that is given to enable students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, supporting skills critical to national security and economic prosperity. The Institute of International Education has administered the program since its inception in 2001.
