CSU to Host Pep Rally for Middle Schoolers

Columbus State University will host 800 eighth-graders for a GEAR UP Georgia schools kick-off event on Sept. 18 in the Lumpkin Center. GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a statewide project that seeks to increase postsecondary access and success for more than 12,000 high need students in more than 40 schools.

The pep rally event will feature Michael Soul of Foxie 105, testimonials from CSU students and a keynote address from award-winning author, Keith “Mr. I’m Possible” Brown. Brown has made appearances on “Showtime at the Apollo”, “Family Feud”, “Celebrity Name Game” and I-Heart and Sirius XM Radio, and he has been featured in the LA Times, Chicago Sun Times and NY Newsday.

All eighth-graders from East Columbus Magnet Academy, Rothschild Leadership Academy and Baker, Eddy and Fort Middle Schools will attend as a kick off to GEAR UP Georgia Week, which has been designated as September 17 – 23. A campus tour is also being planned for the students in the spring of 2018.

“We want to give these students a taste of what college is like, show them that it is within their reach and get them excited about the opportunities that are offered to them through GEAR UP Georgia,” said Randalette Williams, Gear Up Georgia Program Coordinator for Columbus State.
