Homecoming Festivities Set for Feb. 8-13

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State University will celebrate its annual Homecoming Feb. 8-13, with various competitions and student programs during the week, culminating in weekend alumni reunion activities and basketball pre-game tailgating festivities — all under the theme “Super Cougars.”

Student Development Specialist Bernard McCrary said the celebration will involve activities that appeal to students, as well as faculty, staff and alumni.

Beginning with a flag design contest on Monday, student organizations and teams will be awarded participation points throughout the week. Also on Monday, there will various giveaways for students noon-4 p.m. in the Davidson Student Center.

“This really keeps the students engaged in the week and creates a nice buzz around the basketball games with plenty of school spirit,” said McCrary.

A return of the faculty-staff door/office decorating competition also is scheduled. Each department has been e-mailed contest entry forms and guidelines. Entries will be accepted as late as Monday, Feb. 8. Judging begins 10 a.m. the following day. Call 706-568-2029 for more information.

Complementing the more traditional events such as an intramural all-star basketball game (7 p.m. Tuesday, Lumpkin Center) and a dodge ball tournament (noon Wednesday, Woodruff Gym annex), a second running of a golf cart parade is set for 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday. Students will decorate university-issued carts in a display of school spirit and parade them around main campus, ending at the clock tower.

Thursday evening will feature a bonfire at Courtyard I North, following a CSU basketball doubleheader with Flagler College at the Lumpkin Center. The games begin with the Lady Cougars tipping off at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to student-driven activities during the week, the CSU Alumni Association invites all graduates and former students to a Welcome Back Cocktail Reception 7-9 p.m. Friday in Corn Center for the Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery on CSU’s RiverPark campus. Admission is $10 per person and covers cocktails, hors'dourves and ballroom dance lessons. Afterward, participants are encouraged to spend the evening out in the Uptown Columbus entertainment district for live music and other entertainment.

On game-day Saturday, the alumni association will operate a tent where hamburgers and hot dogs are served for $5 per person from11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the Lumpkin Center lawn. Meanwhile, noon-1p.m. free bus tours will cover the main campus and RiverPark campus in downtown Columbus.

Inside the Lumpkin Center, during the basketball doubleheader with Armstrong Atlantic State, the alumni association will stage a children’s play area with games, face painting and other activities.

“It is always a great feeling to see CSU alumni return to CSU as they witness how the campus has changed and embrace the new generation of ‘young Cougars’ now paving the way,” said McCrary.

Also on Saturday morning, alumni, as well as faculty and staff are invited to compete with students in a 9 a.m.-1 p.m. hamburger cook-off on the Lumpkin Center lawn for prizes including a trophy and gift cards.

For the cook-off, off-site meat preparation is allowed but all cooking must occur on site. No electricity will be provided. Propane stoves and grills will be allowed, as well as charcoal grills. All burgers, regardless of meat, will be judged against one another, to include vegetarian or meatless, beef, venison, etc.

The cook-off winners, plus all competition results and homecoming court introductions will be announced during halftime of the men’s basketball game, which tips off at 3:30 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center. The Lady Cougars will take the court at 1:30 p.m.

Overall, the 2010 celebration is designed to reinvigorate a feeling of school spirit for participants.“This theme in itself is new and exciting because it gives the students, faculty and staff the opportunity to showcase everything about themselves and CSU that make us “super,’” said McCrary.
