Oxbow Meadows Goes to the Bugs with Insectival

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Flying fiber and the bee-auty of honey extraction will be some of the featured events at the 13th annual Insectival, scheduled from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at Columbus State University Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center.

“We’ve brought in a lot of new things this year,” Janet Kent, program manager at Oxbow, said. “It’s going to be different from any we’ve ever had before. We think this year there will be something for everyone.”

Insectival is designed to show visitors just how important insects are for a healthy environment. But Insectival is disguised as a fun, family event, and visitors will be able to experience insects in a variety of ways. Visitors can hold them, eat them, watch them or even spit them.

Yes, there will be an assortment of bug snacks, and a cricket-spitting contest. Also on the agenda for this program is:

•   Live Insects!

•   Cricket Spitting Contest

•   Honey Extraction

•   Bug-Eyed Vision

•   Creepy Crawly Crafts and Food

There also will be the Insectival Science Booth (with Doc Atoms). There will be Insect-O-Slime (10 a.m. - 11 a.m., 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.), where you create your own slime and learn about the types of insects that leave behind or spit out sticky residues; Instaworms (11 a.m. - Noon), give patrons an opportunity to make instant glow worms; Flea Jump (Noon - 1 p.m.), where, using air cannons, patrons will get to see a demonstration on how high a flea could jump if it were the size of a cat, and also learn about the leg strength of a flea and Bee Balloons (1 p.m. - 2 p.m.), where participants can create their own buzzing bees using friction inside a balloon. 

Admission to Insectival is $5 per person. Children 3 and under get in free. Those who Follow Insectival on Facebook have a chance to win free tickets.
