Columbus State Offers Free Class to Adults Interested in Going Back to College
February 24, 2015
COLUMBUS, Ga.— Adults thinking about trying college again can now get a taste of college, earn
academic credit and prepare for a degree – for free. Thanks to an adult learner grant, there is no charge for the first 25 students who sign up for Columbus State University’s Square One program, designed specifically to help adult learners transition into the world of higher education. The program is for people who have been out of high school for five or more years and have little or no college experience.
Classes start on March 16 and run for four weeks. Another session is scheduled to begin in May. Classes are taught in the evening and are designed to refresh students’ reading, writing, and math skills, which are needed to pass university entrance exams. The classes also will help adult learners assimilate to college life, process financial aid documentation, and move through the admissions process. Upon enrollment at Columbus State, the Square One course will count as three credit hours toward a degree.
“Many adults who are thinking about going back to college feel like they would be
out of place on a college campus and often have no idea how to begin the process of
returning to school,” said Dustin Worsley, assistant director of Columbus State’s
Academic Center for Excellence and coordinator of the Square One: Adult Re-Entry program.
“Square One walks adults through the entire process and offers students opportunities
to connect with other adult learners.”Worsley said CSU’s program is an active participant in the state’s “Go Back. Move Ahead” campaign, designed to encourage many of the more than one million Georgians who have completed some college to return and finish their degrees.
