Congress recently approved the second phase of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which includes direct monetary grants to qualified college students, to help offset financial challenges caused by the disruption in campus operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Columbus State University will be awarding grant amounts based on each student’s eligibility status. The amount of award is determined by the number of credit hours (capped at 15 credit hours) in which students were enrolled as of March 25, 2021, and their Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by students’ responses to the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). CSU anticipates disbursement of the funds by March 31.

“We recognize these funds may not be enough to address all of the hardships faced by all students. Still, we hope that these resources reduce the burdens faced by a number of them. All of us at Columbus State University understand how challenging and stressful this time is for everyone, and we appreciate their patience as we navigate these difficult times together,” said Chris Markwood, CSU president.

Eligibility status is in one of the following categories:

1. Eligible for funds: Students enrolled in the spring 2021 semester as of March 25, 2021, who have submitted a 2020-21 FAFSA and who are not otherwise excluded (see Item 3 below).
2. Not eligible for funds at this time: Students enrolled in the spring 2021 semester as of March 25, 2021, who have not submitted a 2020-21 FAFSA and who are not otherwise excluded (see Item 3 below). These students have until May 9, 2021, to complete and submit the 2020-21 FAFSA (https://studentaid.gov/) to receive HEERF II Student Grant Aid.
3. Not eligible for funds: Students are not eligible for funds if they are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. In addition, transient, dual enrollment, continuing education, and former students are not eligible.

Spring 2021 Distribution Details

• Amount to be distributed: $2,113,977.96
• Eligible CSU Students: approximately 5,600
• Eligible Credit Hours: 62,464

Students whose EFC is less than $5,712 will receive $37.26 per credit hour (capped at 15 credit hours)

Students whose EFC is more than $5,711 will receive $28.56 per credit hour (capped at 15 credit hours)

The CSU plan is in accordance with federal guidelines and has approval from the University System of Georgia.
