CSU Club Football Team Wins Doughboy Classic

For the first time since the series was revived, Columbus State University's club football team won the Doughboy Classic game against the Doughboys of Fort Benning Thursday night with a final score of 28-12.

Officials from Fort Benning and CSU, with a big help from local supporter John Hargrove, created the inaugural Doughboy Classic in 2010, pitting active-duty soldiers against college club players and reviving a rivalry that had not been played since the early 1970s.

The Fort Benning Doughboys have won the classic each of the last four years. But CSU’s club football team hit some long passes, ran the ball well and got several key interceptions to seal the game, which was played at historic Doughboy Stadium on Fort Benning.

This was CSU President Tim Mescon's last homecoming game as president. He jubilantly accepted the Doughboy trophy at the end of the game, personally congratulating coach Michael Speight and the student players.

"It was great to finally beat the Doughboys. This is fifth year we've played them and it's great to come out victorious," Speight said. "I felt like we had a good chance going into the game - there's just something about this team and the fight they have."

Their final game will be Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. vs. Kennessaw State University at the football field at Britt David Park.
