CSU Events Celebrate Latin American Awareness Week

Latin American Awareness Week at Columbus State University will feature an April 1-6 series of public events to expose the greater Columbus community to various aspects of Latin America.

The following programs are free and open to the public:

Saturday, April 1

Latin American Education Forum: Preparing Latino Youth for the Future, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Center for Commerce and Technology room 205. Description: Targeting Latino students and parents, and local educators, this forum will explore opportunities for student support and higher education preparation, and guidelines for educators to better meet Latino-student needs. Speakers will include:

  • CSU professors Jose Villavicencio and Kyongseon Jeon
  • Verdi N. Avila, comprehensive needs assessment coordinator of migrant education for the Georgia Department of Education
  • Imelda Hernandez, representing the Celia & Marcos Scholarship Fund
  • Doris Brown, an English to Speakers of Other Languages lead teacher for the Muscogee County School District For more information, contact Paola Machado at 706-569-2408.
Monday, April 3

Contemporary Politics of Latin America: North-South Issues, presentation by CSU political science Professor Tom Dolan, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Center for Commerce and Technology room 205. For more information, call 706-565-7875.

 

Tuesday, April 4

Beisbol to La Vida Loca: U.S.-Latin American Cultural Exchange since 1898, a presentation by CSU history Professor Doug Tompson, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Center for Commerce and Technology room 206. For more information, call 706-568-2263.

 

Wednesday, April 5

Latin American Business Forum, 1:30-5:30 p.m. Center for Commerce and Technology room 207. Description: Doing Business in Latin America, 1:30-2:30 p.m. presentation by CSU business Professor Eric Travis; and Marketing to the Hispanic Community, 2:30-3:30 p.m. by Eduardo Lopez of the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center. Lopez will repeat the presentation in Spanish from 3:30-5:30 p.m. 706-562-1659.

 

Thursday, April 6

Live music by Marimba Sol de Chiapas. Separate performances: 12:30 p.m. at the CSU Clock Tower and 5:30 p.m. in the RiverCenters Studio Theatre. Based in Kansas City, the band was formed in 1988 as Marimba Yajal by Laurence Kaptain, now director of CSUs Schwob School of Music.
