Columbus State will host Augusta State for an NCAA softball doubleheader on Friday at Lady Cougar Field. APRIL 13 - International Film Series: ‘The Official Story’
Columbus State’s Center for International Education will screen the 1985 Argentine drama, The Official Story 7 p.m. Monday in the International House at University Avenue and Clearview Circle. The plot follows a Buenos Aires high school teacher, who traces the history of her adopted daughter to the birth mother, who disappeared as an assumed victim of Argentina’s 1976-1983 military coup and junta. APRIL 13 - Guitar Studio Chamber Recital
Members of the CSU guitar studio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The program will feature a world premiere of a newly commissioned work from composer Michael Nicolella, an artist in residence at CSU’s McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians. Admission is free. APRIL 14-16 – Schwob Library Book Sale
Columbus State’s Simon Schwob Memorial Library will hold a book sale April 14-16. Sale times are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, 2-7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday. Items will include a large selection of fiction and nonfiction hard hardcover and paperbacks, computer books, single and boxed-set long-playing records, bound and unbound musical scores more. APRIL 14 - A Celebration of Student Writing
Advanced student writers will exhibit their work in interactive formats during Columbus State’s second annual “Celebration of Student Writing” noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 in the Cunningham Center. The displays will demonstrate “how student writing fosters the researcher’s habits of mind,” said Jim Owen, director of CSU’s Faculty Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, which is presenting the fair. The event will feature writing projects from multiple disciplines, including the demonstration of two interactive games from a Cultural Anthropology course, projects from Contemporary Accounting Theory, inquiries into the nature of light from the Physics of Color and Sound, and student approaches to the use of internet sources in Renaissance Literature in Britain.

The event is free and open to the public and part of the university's Quality Enhancement Plan, “Writing the Solution: Steps Toward Developing Competent and Professional Student Writers.” For more information, call 706-565-4139.

APRIL 14 - ‘Last Lecture’ by George Stanton
George Stanton, vice president for academic affairs and a longtime biology professor at CSU, will offer a “last lecture” titled “In Darwin’s Steps” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Stanley Hall 203. The event, followed by a reception, is free and open to the public as part of the CSU Student Government Association’s Last Lecture Series, which was inspired by a 2007 speech by Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon computer professor who later died of cancer. As with Pausch, CSU’s SGA has framed its lecture series by faculty around the question, “What wisdom would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?” Stanton, a CSU faculty member since 1969, moved into CSU’s top academic post in 2006. Guitarist Michael Nicolella, a composer in residence at CSU’s McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. With a repertoire spanning from J.S. Bach to Jimi Hendrix, Nicolella is respected as one of America’s most innovative classical guitar virtuosos. Philosophy professor Maya Soboleva, CSU’s 2008-2009 Mildred Miller Fort Foundation Visiting Scholar in European Studies, will give a talk, “Language and Identity ” 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 in the International House at Clearview Circle and University Aveune. The lecture is free and open to the public. Soboleva, whose expertise covers epistemology , philosophy of language and Russian and German philosophy, will base her upcoming talk on the work of Bulgakov , a renowned and influential Russian Orthodox theologian. APRIL 16 - Documentary Screening: ‘The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories’
Columbus State’s Department of History and Georgraphy will screen the award-winning documentary The Mosquito Problem and other Stories at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at the International House at Clearview Circle and University Avenue. The film’s writer, University of Toronto historian Lilia Topouzova, will introduce the screening and lead a discussion afterward. Premiering at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival,the film captured the Human Rights Award at the 2008 Sarajevo International Film Festival. The film tells the epic story of the village of Belene, Bulgaria and its evolution to a concentration camp, the city, and home to a nuclear power plant and mosquito problem. APRIL 16 – Guest Speaker: Global Company CEO
Garry Ridge, president and CEO of the WD-40 Co., will describe how his company expanded its product line and doubled its sales at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 16 in Columbus State University’s University Hall auditorium. The program, part of the Turner College of Business Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, is free and open to the public. APRIL 17 - Closing Reception for ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ Ceramics Exhibition
Columbus State’s Department of Art will host a closing reception for both the guest ceramics exhibition “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” and its annual Student Juried Art Exhibition — in the Bay Gallery — from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 17 in the Corn Center for Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery in downtown Columbus. The program is free. The ceramics exhibition, said curator and CSU ceramics professor Matthew Isaacson, reflects “the mentors and friends who have shaped my philosophies, ideologies and interests.” The participating artists, who have mentored, worked with or influenced Isaacson, are Val Cushing, Chris Gustin, Wayne Higby, Ji-Wan Joo, Karen Karnes, Jackson Li, Brad Schwieger, Don Reitz, Allan Rosenbaum, Chris Staley, Lydia Thompson, the late Peter Voulkos and John Jessiman.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday. The Corn Center is located at 6 West 10th St. in downtown Columbus. APRIL 17 - Benefit Concert for Girls Inc.
Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music will present a benefit concert, titled SAI True Colors of Music, for Girls Inc. of Columbus at 6 p.m. Friday, April 17 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The program will feature a variety of musical genres including gospel, classical and jazz. Admission is free with donations collected at the door. Before the event, Girls Inc. will bring about 25 girls, ages 6-16, to the Schwob School of Music’s Saunders Center for Music Studies for activities including an “instrument petting zoo” and a sing-along with Schwob students.
