APRIL 2-5 - CSU Theatre Staging ‘Machinal’
Columbus State University Theatre will is staging the 1928 Broadway classic, Machinal, this weekend at CSU Theatre on the Park Mainstage in downtown Columbus. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. CSU professor Becky Becker directs Sophie Treadwell’s drama that’s loosely based on the sensational 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder, the first woman put to death by the electric chair for murdering her husband. General admission is $15; $13 for seniors, children, active military and CSU alumni; and free for CSU faculty and staff and students . APRIL 3 – Solo Ceramics Exhibition to Open on Main Campus
Columbus State’s Department of Art will open a solo exhibition, “The Grandiose Numerical Equation,” by ceramics professor Matthew Paul Isaacson 6-8 p.m. Friday in the University Hall Experimental Theatre on the CSU main campus. The exhibition will run through an April 24 closing reception. In between, free viewing hours are noon-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. APRIL 3 - Student Violin Recital

APRIL 3 - Mingus Big Band to Open Jazz Festival
The Mingus Big Band will open the inaugural Columbus State Jazz Festival with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in RiverCenter’s Bill Heard Theatre. The band specializes in the works of the late Charles Mingus, performs weekly at New York City’s Jazz Standard and also tours Europe and North America. Its Columbus performance will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landmark Mingus albums Mingus Ah Um and Blues And Roots. Earlier in the evening, band members will present a pre-concert discussion beginning 6:45 p.m. in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. This program is free while concert admission prices are $5; $2 for senior citizens, military personnel and non-CSU students; and free with CSU ID. APRIL 4 - Columbus State Jazz Festival Programs
Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music will present a high school band performances, a workshop and a pair of feature concerts on Saturday as part of the inaugural Columbus State Jazz Festival at RiverCenter:

• Jackson County High School performance, 8am, Studio Theatre, free admission
• Harris County High School performance, 9am, Studio Theatre,free admission
• CSU Jazz Workshop, 10:15-10:45 a.m., Studio Theatre, free admission
• CSU Jazz Band concert, 1 p.m., Bill Heard Theatre; $5
• David Brothers Super Big Band concert, 4 p.m,, Bill Heard Theatre, $5

The CSU Jazz Band, led by festival director and CSU professor Shirantha Beddage, will feature guest trumpeter Melvin Jones, director of bands for Morehouse College. The Atlanta-based David Brothers Super Big Band is an ensemble of jazz performers from across Georgia. Along with the $5 general ticket price for each concert, admission is $2 for senior citizens, military personnel and non-CSU students; and free with CSU ID. APRIL 5 - Bass Trombonist Charlie Vernon
Charlie Vernon, virtuoso bass trombonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will perform 4 p.m. Sunday at RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Vernon will be accompanied by the CSU Trombone Octet and the CSU Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Schwob School of Music Director Fred Cohen. With the philharmonic, Vernon will perform new concerto Chick-a-Bone Checkout, composed for him by Christian Lindberg. APRIL 6 - Speaker: How U.S. Civil Rights Movement Influenced Irish Writers
Michael Parker, professor of English at the University of Central Lancashire in England, will deliver a lecture, “Civil Rights, Uncivil States: America's Impact on Northern Irish Literature, 1960-71,” 7 p.m. Monday at the Carson McCullers Center, 1519 Stark Ave., Columbus. Parker will describe how literature of Northern Ireland in the 1960s was influenced by the American civil rights movement. APRIL 8 – Rehab to Headline Concert at CSU
Columbus State’s Student Activities Council and Student Government Association will host a concert performance by Southern rock-hip hop act, Rehab, with special guest Ethos, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 in the Lumpkin Center. Rehab’s current tour is in promotion of the band’s latest CD release, Graffiti The World. The group recently released the single, “Bartender Song,” recorded with country superstar Hank Williams Jr. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $7 for CSU students, faculty and staff. APRIL 9 – Civil War Historian to Present ‘Bitterly Divided’
Civil War historian David Williams will give a talk based on his recent book, Bitterly Divided: The South’s Inner Civil War, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9 at the Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum, 1002 Victory Drive, Columbus. The program, presented by Columbus State’s Department of History and Geography, is free. Williams, a Valdosta State University history professor, contends white Southerners were as likely to have opposed secession as supported it, and subsequently undermined the Confederate war effort. Weekend Bird Walks at Oxbow Meadows
The Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center is hosting weekend “Bird Walks” from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. The program is free and designed for adults and children ages 10 and older. Binoculars and bird field guides are provided. Reservations are required. Group Exhibition: ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’
Columbus State’s Department of Art is hosting “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” a ceramics exhibition by guest artists through April 18 in the Corn Center for Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery in downtown Columbus. Participating artists are Val Cushing, Chris Gustin, Wayne Higby, John Jessiman, Ji-Wan Joo, Karen Karnes, Jackson Li, Brad Schwieger, Don Reitz, Allan Rosenbaum, Chris Staley, Lydia Thompson and Peter Voulkos. A closing reception is set for 6-7 p.m. April 17 in the gallery.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday. The Corn Center is located at 6 West 10th St. in downtown Columbus.
