AUG. 10 – Orientation for Nontraditional, Transfer Students
Columbus State will hold a daylong orientation for new nontraditional students and transfer students on Monday. CSU defines a nontraditional student as someone who has not attended high school or college in the past five years. Check in is 8-9 a.m. in the University Hall lobby. AUG. 11-SEPT. 5 – CSU Faculty ‘Studio Arts’ Exhibition
Columbus State’s Department of Art will feature artwork in various media by its faculty and staff starting Tuesday in an exhibition titled “CSU: Studio Arts,” in the Corn Center for the Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery on CSU’s RiverPark Campus. A reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 is part of the exhibition that will run through Sept. 5. Gallery admission is free. Fall semester hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday: and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday. The Corn Center is located at 6 West 10th St., Columbus. AUG. 13 – Move-In Day to Welcome New Students
In an event that has grown into a Columbus State tradition, faculty, staff and student volunteers will welcome and help move new students into their apartments on main campus as part of CSU Residence Life’s Move-In day on Thursday, Aug. 13. Daylong activities at Courtyard I on University Avenue will begin at 9 a.m. Students at CSU’s RiverPark campus move in Aug. 13-15 by appointment to ease congestion. AUG. 14 - ‘Kids to College’ Rally to Bring Nearly 2,000 Fifth-Graders to CSU
Columbus State’s College of Education and Health Professions will host a 2009 Kids to College Pep Rally from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug.14 in the Lumpkin Center. About 1,900 fifth graders and their teachers representing 23 schools from Fort Benning and the Muscogee, Harris and Talbot county school systems will participate. The event is designed to inspire the students to start thinking about college as they hear from CSU officials and participate in activities such as a soccer shootout with the CSU women’s soccer squad and a spirit competition directed by the CSU cheerleaders. AUG. 15 – Faculty-Staff ‘Day of Service’ to Impact Community Projects
In honor of the inauguration of Tim Mescon as CSU president, CSU faculty, staff and students will participate in a Day of Service on Saturday, Aug. 15. Working through the United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley Volunteer Center, volunteers will board CSU buses starting 8:30 a.m. at the campus intramural field on University Avenue for projects such as clearing a lot for a new Habitat for Humanity house, a baseball field renovation for the North Columbus Boys and Girls Club and planting shrubs at he D.A. Turner YMCA. Buses will transport volunteers back to the intramural fields and Mock Pavilion for a picnic lunch at 1 p.m. Volunteers are signing up for their projects online at http://www.handsonthevalley.org. AUG. 16 – Presidential Inauguration and 2009 Freshman Convocation
Columbus State University will stage its annual Freshman Convocation and inaugurate Timothy S. Mescon as the university’s fourth president in a pair of ceremonies starting 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 in RiverCenter’s Bill Heard Theatre. Inauguration speakers will include Mescon’s father, longtime Georgia State University professor Michael Mescon and, representing the University System of Georgia, Board of Regents Chair Bob Hatcher from Macon, Chancellor Erroll B. Davis and Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Susan Herbst.

For the Freshman Convocation, CSU Provost Inessa Levi and Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Gina Sheeks will speak and officially welcome freshmen into the college academic community. AUG. 17 – Fall Semester Classes Begin

CSU Music Conservatory Fall Registration Registration is open to pre-college and adult students in the community for fall programs at the CSU Music Conservatory, a division of the Schwob School of Music. The conservatory offers individual lessons in piano, guitar, voice, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Students, beginners through advanced, are welcome to participate. Lessons take place in the Saunders Center for Music Studies at the RiverCenter. Lesson times are arranged individually.
