AUG. 11 - Activities, Competitions to Welcome Back RiverPark Campus Students
From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, new and returning students living in Columbus State University’s downtown housing will participate in various activities and games to help the students get to know each other, and their residence assistants, before school starts on Aug. 16.

The fun starts at noon when the students divide into teams to race to various downtown businesses, where they will compete in challenges, such as eating ice cream without their hands at Brothers General Store. At 1 p.m., they will have lunch on the green space between the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and the Rankin. Following lunch, at the same location, various inflatables and games will be set up for the students. For more information, call 706-507-8035.

AUG. 12 – Oxbow Meadows: ‘Composting and Earthworms’
CSU’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will present “Composting and Earthworms” at 2 p.m., Sunday. Part of the Second Sunday series, the program will highlight soil as a living resource and the earthworm as a special creature making the soil healthy. Kerry Smith, representing the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, will demonstrate the earthworm’s biology and how it composts soil. Admission is $2 per person and free for ages 3 and under. AUG. 13 – Universitywide Meeting to Feature President’s State of the University Address, Service Awards
CSU President Frank Brown will deliver a State of the University Address to CSU employees at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Columbus Convention Trade Center. The address is part of CSU’s annual universitywide meeting that also includes faculty-staff service award presentations and a luncheon. The programs’ downtown site will complement a RiverPark campus open house for university personnel. Self-guided tours will include the Corn Center for Visual Arts, CSU Theatre on the Park, the CSU Village on Broadway , the Schwob School of Music and Omnisphere Theater shows in CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center. AUG. 13 – Enrollment Services to Extend Hours to Serve Graduate Students
CSU Enrollment Services’ One Stop Shop will operate from 5-8 p.m. Monday to serve students entering graduate school. Students can obtain parking permits; make payments; speak with admissions, financial aid and veterans affairs representatives; and learn more about CSU’s Fort Benning campus. AUG. 14 - Late Registration, Fee Payment Deadline For Fall Classes

AUG. 14 – ‘Kids to College’ Pep Rally Targets 1,500-Plus Area 5th-Graders
Columbus State University will stage a 10-11 a.m. pep rally on Tuesday in the Lumpkin Center to initiate more than 1,500 area fifth-graders to a program geared to inspire them to start thinking about college. The event represents a 5-year-old program that initially targeted Harris County fifth graders and extended to Fort Benning schools last year. This year, the program, which has expanded to the CSU College Education Partner School Network, is comprised of schools from Harris, Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties; Phenix City and Fort Benning.

In addition to a performance by the CSU cheerleading squad, the following CSU officials will speak to the gathering about setting goals for college: President Frank Brown, Enrollment Services Executive Director Kathy Carlisle, College of Education Dean David Rock and Athletic Director Herbert Greene.

AUG. 16 - Fall Semester Begins, Downtown MBA Courses to Debut
Thursday, Aug. 16 marks the first day of classes for the fall semester at CSU. With the new academic year, the D. Abbott Turner College of Business will offer four courses affiliated with CSU’s Master of Business Administration program at the RiverPark campus in downtown Columbus. The classes will meet separately from 6-8:45 p.m., once per week in the Yancey Center at One Arsenal Place, next to the Convention and Trade Center.

About 100 students — 25 in each class — will take advantage of the scheduling that’s intended give professionals in the downtown area easy access to a program that recently achieved the highest level of accreditation possible, international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

AUG. 18 – Sci-Fi Under the Stars Double Feature
CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center on Saturday, Aug. 18 will screen both “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” and “The War of the Worlds” on the center’s south lawn. The latter is the original film adaptation, starring Gene Barry, of the H.G. Wells story told on radio of the invasion of Earth by Martians.
