FEB. 12-15 & 20-21 - CSU Theatre Staging 'The Cripple of Inishmaan'
Columbus State University's Department of Theatre is staging the comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan this weekend and the following weekend, Feb. 20-21, in the Studio at CSU Theatre on the Park. Curtain times both weekends are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday . Written by Martin McDonagh in the tradition of Irish storytelling. the plot's setting is a remote island in 1934 off the coast of Ireland where a Hollywood producer has arrived to make a film and draws 'Cripple Billy' from the nearby town of Inishmaan to vie for a role, and the town's diverse and eccentric citizens watch ravenously to see what happens. FEB. 13 - Student Violin Recital

Feb. 14-15 - Bird Walks at Oxbow Meadows: 'Rusty Blackbird Blitz'
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will host weekend 'Bird Walks' from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. CSU ornithologist Annie Crary will guide these walks themed 'Rusty Blackbird Blitz' and focused on finding Rusty Blackbirds. The cost is $4 per person, and the program is structured for adults and children 10 and older. Binoculars and bird field guides will be provided. FEB. 14-16 - 'Great Backyard Bird Count' at Oxbow Meadows
The Environmental Learning Center at Oxbow Meadows will be one of several sites for the 'Great Backyard Bird Count' from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday through Monday across the United States and Canada. Bird watchers of all ages can participate in this annual effort to count birds to create a real-time snap shot of 'where the birds are across of North America.' FEB. 14 - 'Bees and Beekeeping' Demonstration at Oxbow Meadows
Jim Harris of the Chattahoochee Valley Beekeepers Association will present 'Bees and Beekeeping' at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. FEB. 16 & 21-22 - Tree Identification Workshops at Oxbow Meadows
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will stage 'This Bud's For You: February Tree Identification' at 3 p.m. Monday, plus 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22. Experts from the Georgia Forestry Commission and Trees Columbus , plus CSU's Environmental Learning Center staff will show how to identify a tree when its branches are bare by applying the '3-B's' of winter tree identification: bark, branching and buds. The workshops also will explore winter fruit, seeds and twigs.

FEB. 16 - Concert to Feature Works of Guest Composer Derek Bermel
The CSU Percussion Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra and faculty artists Lisa Oberlander , Andre Gaskins and Brad Palmer will perform a concert featuring the works of guest composer Derek Bermel at 7:30 p.m. Monday in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Bermell, a 2009 composer-in-residence with CSU's McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, is a composer, clarinetist and conductor noted for incorporating various facets of world music, funk and jazz into classical music. Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present a performance featuring guest clarinetist David Singer at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Singer, co-principal clarinetist of New York City's Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and chair of the Woodwind Department at Montclair State University , will perform with CSU faculty artists Gila Goldstein , Andre Gaskins and Sergiu Schwartz . FEB. 21 - Schwob School of Music's Children's Open House
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will stage a children's open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Saunders Center for Music Studies in RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. CSU music students will present games and an 'Instrument Petting Zoo,' where kids can touch, see and hear various instruments. Also, the CSU Philharmonic will perform children's classics between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event is free and intended for children ages 4-14, accompanied by a parent. FEB. 21 - Science Olympiad for Middle Grades
Columbus State will host a 2009 Science Olympiad regional tournament for area middle school students from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, February 21. Competitions will take place in Lenoir and Stanley halls, plus Woodruff Gym. A 4 p.m. awards ceremony will take place in the University Hall auditorium. CSU faculty members and students will supervise 23 events involving biology, computers, chemistry and physics. Directed by Columbus State chemistry professor Anil Banerjee, with assistant director and biology professor Katey Sellers, the competition will involve 14 teams from 12 middle schools, including eight Columbus-area schools.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Science Olympiad, which aims to improve the quality of science education and provide recognition for those who excel in science.
