FEB. 15 – Southeast Horn Workshop Opening Concert
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present the opening concert for the 2008 Southeast Horn Workshop at 2 p.m. Friday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Admission is $5 and free for faculty, staff and students with CSU ID. For tickets, call the RiverCenter Box Office at 706-256-3612.

The Friday-Sunday workshop is expected to attract about 130 professional players, college professors and their students, high school students and amateur players from throughout the Southeast. Additionally, local music enthusiasts are welcome to attend various programs, including performance competitions, master classes, lectures, vendor demonstrations, horn ensembles and solo recitals. FEB. 15-16 – NCAA Baseball: CSU Hosts Nova Southeastern
The CSU baseball squad will host Nova Southeastern for a three-game series at Ragsdale Field. Game times are 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. FEB. 15 – Horn Workshop Artist Randy Gardner to Perform
Randy Gardner, a featured artist for the CSU-hosted Southeast Horn Workshop, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. A faculty member of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory, Gardner has performed and presented master classes around the world. FEB. 16 - ‘Math Mornings’ Program Targets Middle School Girls
CSU’s Columbus Regional Mathematics Collaborative will stage the second of two “Math Mornings” sessions for middle school girls from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road. The program is designed to engage girls in grades 6-8 in hands-on activities and explorations to increase their appreciation for mathematics. Math collaborative resource teachers and local middle grades teachers will lead the session, which is part of an effort to provide additional encouragement to females, who are traditionally underrepresented in upper-level high school and college mathematics courses and in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Horn soloist Erik Ruske, a featured artist for the CSU-hosted Southeast Horn Workshop, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. FEB. 18 – Lecture by Guest Artist Suzanne Silver
Artist Suzanne Silver, noted for an expansive approach to drawing, will give a presentation related to her work 6 p.m. Monday in Carpenters Hall at the corner of 9th Street and Broadway on CSU’s RiverPark Campus in downtown Columbus. Silver, a professor at Ohio State University, has exhibited her work around the world and also is noted for combining unexpected materials such as powders, balloons, gold leaf, thread, paints, soap and slate to create a visual language that’s open to interpretation. FEB. 19 – ‘Drawing a Blank’ Art Exhibition to Open with Reception
CSU’s Department of Art will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in CSU’s Corn Center for the Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery for the Feb. 20-March 14 exhibition “Drawing a Blank” by Suzanne Silver . FEB. 19 – Guest Saxophonist Steve Stusek to Perform
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a concert by guest saxophonist Steve Stusek at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. Director of Saxophone programs at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Stusek has performed and given master classes internationally and is a founding member of the Red Clay Sax Quartet. FEB. 20 - Art Department Guest Lecture by English Author Patrick Eyres
Patrick Eyres, an expert on English garden and landscape structures, will present “Collaboration, Education Publication: An Overview of Research Activity” at 6 p.m. Wednesday at CSU’s Theatre on the Park in Columbus State University’s Art and Theatre Complex at 10th Street and Bay Avenue in downtown Columbus.

Eyres is managing editor of New Arcadian Journal, which specializes in analysis of the cultural politics of historical landscapes. He also is a senior lecturer in art and design at Bradford College , where he is course leader of the master’s program in the politics of visual representation. FEB. 20 – Poetry Readings by Richard Garcia
Prize-winning poet and author Richard Garcia will read from his works in a pair of free programs at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the McCullers House at 1519 Stark Ave. in Columbus and at 7:30 p.m. in CSU’s International House at University Avenue and Clearview Circle. Garcia, whose awards include the prestigious Pushcart Prize, has authored two books of poetry, “The Flying Garcias” and “Rancho Notorious,” and a bilingual children’s book, “My Aunt Otilia’s Spirits.”

His visit is sponsored by the university’s Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, in cooperation with the Georgia Poetry Circuit. For more information, call 706-565-4021.

FEB. 20 - Registration Deadline for Feb. 23 Hispanic-Latino Youth College Conference
Wednesday is the deadline to register for CSU’s third annual Hispanic/Latino Youth College Conference from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, starting in the main lobby of the Center Commerce and Technology. The event targets Hispanic and Latino prospective college students and their parents. Workshops will cover entrance exam preparation, financial aid, applying for scholarships and more. The event is supported by CSU’s Hispanic Scholarship Fund. FEB. 22 – Black Applause Banquet
CSU will hold its 25th annual Black Applause Banquet on Friday, Feb. 22 in the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. A 6:30 p.m. reception will be followed by dinner at 7 p.m. A CSU Black History Month tradition, the event will feature recognitions of outstanding local high school and CSU students, plus presentation of the Dr. John Townsend Achievement Award to Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley. Named in honor of CSU’s first African-American student, the Townsend award recognizes outstanding community and-or professional service and achievement.
