FEB. 20-21 – Closing Weekend for CSU Theatre's 'The Cripple of Inishmaan'
Columbus State University's Department of Theatre will stage The Cripple of Inishmaan
at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in CSU Theatre on the Park Studio. Written by Martin
McDonagh in the tradition of Irish storytelling, the plot's setting is a remote island
in 1934 off the coast of Ireland where a Hollywood producer has arrived to make a
film and draws 'Cripple Billy' from the nearby town of Inishmaan to vie for a role,
and the town's diverse and eccentric citizens watch ravenously to see what happens.

FEB. 20 - Guest Clarinetist David Singer
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present a performance featuring guest
clarinetist David Singer at 7:30 p.m. Friday in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Singer,
co-principal clarinetist of New York City's Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and chair of
the Woodwind Department at Montclair State University , will perform with CSU faculty
artists Gila Goldstein , Andre Gaskins and Sergiu Schwartz . The program will include
works by Poulenc, Cohen, Brahms and Bartok. Admission prices are $5; $2 for senior

FEB. 21-22 - Tree Identification Workshops at Oxbow Meadows
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will present 'This
Bud's For You: February Tree Identification' at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. CSU's
Environmental Learning Center staff will show how to identify a tree when its branches
are bare by applying the '3-B's' of winter tree identification: bark, branching and
buds. The workshops also will explore winter fruit, seeds and twigs. The programs
are structured for adults and children 10 and older at $4 per person. Reservations

FEB. 21 - Schwob School of Music's Children's Open House
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will stage a children's open house from 10
a.m.-2 p.m. at the Saunders Center for Music Studies in RiverCenter for the Performing
Arts. CSU music students will present games and an 'Instrument Petting Zoo,' where
kids can touch, see and hear various instruments. Also, the CSU Philharmonic will
perform children's classics between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event is free and intended

FEB. 21 - Science Olympiad for Middle Grades
Columbus State will host a 2009 Science Olympiad regional tournament for area middle
school students from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Competitions will take place in Lenoir
and Stanley halls, plus Woodruff Gym. A 4 p.m. awards ceremony will take place in
the University Hall auditorium. CSU faculty members and students will supervise 23
events involving biology, computers, chemistry and physics. Directed by Columbus State
chemistry professor Anil Banerjee, with assistant director and biology professor Katey
Sellers, the competition will involve 14 teams from 12 middle schools, including eight

FEB. 21 – CSU-USC Aiken NCAA Basketball Doubleheader
Columbus State will host USC Aiken for a pair of NCAA basketball games on Saturday,
Feb. 21 in the Lumpkin Center. The women's contest tips off at 2 p.m., followed by
the men at 4 p.m. Admission prices are $5 for adults; $3 for students/kids ; and free

FEB. 21 – Astronomy Night at Roosevelt State Park
CSU's Coca-Cola Space Science Center will stage an Astronomy Night program of stargazing
and planet viewing at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at Roosevelt State Park, Pine Mountain.

FEB. 22 - Faculty Voice Recital by Constantina Tsolainou
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present a faculty voice recital by Constantina
Tsolainou at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Tsolainou, the Paul
S. and Jean R. Amos Faculty Chair in Music and Director of Choral Activities, will
perform a program titled Love Songs, Folk Songs, and Hums with works by Strauss, Canteloube,

FEB. 22 - Guest Euphonium Recital
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present a guest euphonium recital by
Demondrae Thurman at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 in RiverCenter's Studio Theatre. Thurman,
a low brass professor at the University of Alabama, will perform a program for euphonium

FEB. 23 - Violin Studio Gala Concert
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present 'Bravissimo,' a violin studio
gala concert, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Sergiu Schwartz,
the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Violin, will be
joined by award winning CSU violin students in a concert of romantic and virtuoso

FEB. 24 - NCAA Softball: CSU Hosts Georgia Southwestern

FEB. 26 - Choral Concert
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present a concert by the Chamber Singers

student Terrance Green will conduct a program of works by Pergolesi, Faure, Durufle,

FEB. 27 - Black Applause Banquet
Columbus State will hold its 26th annual Black Applause Banquet on Friday, Feb. 27
in the Cunningham Center's Blanchard Hall. A 6:30 p.m. reception will be followed
by dinner at 7 p.m. A CSU Black History Month tradition, the event will feature recognitions
of outstanding local high school and CSU students and the presentation of the Dr.
John Townsend Achievement Award to a local individual or service group, in honor of
Townsend, the first African American to enroll at CSU. The keynote speaker will be
state Sen. Emanuel Jones, president-owner of Legacy Chevrolet in Columbus. The event
is presented by CSU's Office of Diversity Programs and Services. Tickets are $30.

FEB. 28 - Bird Walk at Oxbow Meadows Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows
Environmental Learning Center will host a 'Bird Walk' from 8-9 a.m. Saturday, Feb.
28 along the trails at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. The cost is $4 per person,
and the program is structured for adults and children 10 and older. Binoculars and

FEB. 28-March 1 - International Guitar Competition and Symposium
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will host its 10th annual CSU Guitar Competition
and Symposium on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 1 at RiverCenter. Classical
guitarists of all levels, and from around the world, will gather for guest artist
concerts, masterclasses, lectures and an international competition with divisions

FEB. 28 - Guitar Symposium Concert by Duo Spiritoso and SoloDuo
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will present classical guitar performances
by Duo Spiritoso and SoloDuo Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 28 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. The concert is part of the 10th annual CSU Guitar
Competition and Symposium.
Duo Spiritoso's Jeffrey McFadden and Andrew Zohn have performed together since 2004, drawing reviews, such as from Guitar Magazine: 'Their shared musical sensibilities, technical prowess and unwavering standards provided a performance that was at once audacious, dynamic, moving and powerful.' Zohn, a Schwob school faculty artist, is the symposium's founding director. SoloDuo features Italy's Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli, who have performed worldwide since 2000. Admission is $20.
