FEB. 6 - Reception for Visiting Artist-Scholar Pepon Osorio
A reception for artist Pepón Osorio, Columbus State University's 2009 Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Eminent Scholar in Latin American Studies, is set for 5 p.m. Friday in the Corn Center for Visual Arts' Illges Gallery. Born in Puerto Rico, the Philadelphia-based Osorio's work is influenced in part by his experiences as a social worker in the Bronx. He is noted for large-scale installations, designed to inspire awareness of place within communities and class structures. FEB. 6 – NCAA Tennis: CSU Hosts Tuskegee

Feb. 7-8 & 14-15 - Bird Walks at Oxbow Meadows: 'Rusty Blackbird Blitz'
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will host weekend 'Bird Walks' from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7-8 and 14-15 at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. CSU ornithologist Annie Crary will guide these walks themed 'Rusty Blackbird Blitz' and focused on finding Rusty Blackbirds. The cost is $4 per person, and the program is designed for adults and children ages 10 and older. Binoculars and bird field guides will be provided. FEB. 7-8 & 14-16 - 'Great Backyard Bird Count' Activities at Oxbow Meadows
The Environmental Learning Center at Oxbow Meadows will conduct free training at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7-8, for individuals interested in participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Subsequently, the center will become one of several sites across the United States and Canada for the 'count,' Feb. 14-16, as bird watchers of all ages participate in the annual event for counting birds to create a real-time snap shot of 'where the birds are across of North America.' FEB. 7 - Visitation Day for Prospective Students, Their Parents
Columbus State will host a Visitation Day for high school students and their parents from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday. Activities will begin at the Lumpkin Center as participants can learn about CSU, tour campus, meet current students and speak with professors in their academic field of interest. FEB. 9 - International Film Series: 'Moolaade'
Columbus State's Center for International Education will screen the 2004 African film Moolaade at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 in the International House at University Avenue and Clearview Circle. Written and directed by Ousmane Sembene, the film is about, and against, the custom of female circumcision. The setting is a small village in Burkina Faso, where a woman draws the ire of village traditionalists by providing moolaade to young girls seeking to avoid the circumcision ritual. 'It is a film of politics and anger, and also a film of beauty, humor, and a deep affection for human nature,' said film critic Roger Ebert. The screening at CSU is free and open the public. FEB. 10 - BET's Jeff Johnson to Speak
Award-winning journalist Jeff Johnson will give a presentation themed '365 DAYS: Black History Beyond February' at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University Hall auditorium. Johnson, managing editor and chief correspondent for BET's The Truth with Jeff Johnson, also provides weekly commentary on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and has contributed frequently to MSNBC's Dayside and Hardball with Chris Matthews, CNN, FOX News Channel, Huffington Post and other media outlets and Internet sites. He earned a 2008 NABJ Salute to Excellence Award for BET's Life & Death in Darfur, Jeff Johnson Reports series and is one of 30 young leaders selected for the British Council's Transatlantic 2020 team of Europeans and Americans for a new cross-border dialogue to reinvigorate traditional alliances and mend transatlantic rifts. FEB. 10 - Columbus Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Columbus State will host the Columbus Regional Science and Engineering Fair for local students from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Founders Hall at the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. The participants — 94 middle school students and 34 high school students – will display their research projects and discuss their work with the judges, including CSU science professors and off-campus professionals. The projects cover biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, medicine and physics. Top finishers will qualify for the 61st Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in April at the University of Georgia. FEB. 10 - Pianist Ian Hominick to Perform
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music will host a performance by guest pianist Ian Hominick at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Hominick, who has performed across North America and Europe, will perform works by Clementi, Schubert, Ravel and Thalberg, whose music Hominick featured on his acclaimed CD The Piano Music of Sigismund Thalberg. His performances have aired on CBC Radio, Radio-Canada and National Public Radio. FEB. 11 – CSU-North Georgia NCAA Basketball Doubleheader
Columbus State will host North Georgia for a pair of NCAA basketball games on Wednesday in the Lumpkin Center. FEB. 12 - Guest Artist Lecture
Columbus State's Department of Art will present a lecture by Auburn art professor Christopher McNulty at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in Carpenters Hall at 9th Street and Broadway on CSU's RiverPark campus. McNulty, whose work is part of 34.5 N.W., a Jan. 21-Feb. 21 exhibition in CSU's Illges Gallery, creates sculptural objects, video and works on paper. He has exhibited his work nationally, including the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Atlanta's Saltworks Gallery, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Rockford Art Museum and others. FEB. 12 - CSU Philharmonic with Concerto Competition Winners
The CSU Philharmonic Orchestra will perform six concerto movements with the student winners of the 2008-2009 Schwob School of Music Concerto Competition at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. The orchestra. conducted by Schwob School Director Fred Cohen, also will perform Verdi's overture from 'La forza del destino.' FEB. 12-15 - CSU Theatre to Stage 'The Cripple of Inishmaan'
Columbus State University's Department of Theatre will present the comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 12-15, and Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, in the CSU Theatre on the Park Studio. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Written by Martin McDonagh in the tradition of Irish storytelling, the setting is a remote island in 1934 off the coast of Ireland where a Hollywood producer has arrived to make a film and draws 'Cripple Billy' from the nearby town of Inishmaan to vie for a role, attracting the attention of the town's diverse and eccentric citizens.
