JAN. 20 – Rupert Fike Reading
CSU’s Carson McCullers Center will host a reading by Rupert Fike, the Pushcart Prize-nominated Atlanta-area poet whose latest collection, LotusBuffet, was published by local literary press Brick Road Press at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the center, 1519 Stark Ave.

JAN. 20 – Boy Scout Astronomy Badge Program
Columbus State’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center will hold a day of exploration and discovery for Boy Scouts from 5 p.m.–11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the center, 701 Front Ave. During this five-part program, scouts learn about stars, constellations, the moon, and planets through interactive classroom sessions, center exhibits, and the Omnisphere Theater. This program is aligned with the Boy Scout astronomy badge, so participating scouts will qualify for their badges upon its completion. Program cost is $17.50. JAN. 21 – Mind, Body and Spirit Retreat for Women
Columbus State’s Cunningham Center for Leadership Development will host the ninth annual Mind, Body and Spirit Retreat for Women from 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at the center, 3100 Gentian Blvd. This retreat is designed to open the eyes of women to new possibilities, energize their spirit and challenge their minds with new ways to improve themselves and the lives of those around them. JAN. 23 – GROW! Film Screening and Reception
Columbus State’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will hold a screening and reception for the film GROW! The film takes a look at a new generation of sustainable farmers through the eyes of 20 idealistic, independent young growers – among them Chris and Jenny Jackson of Jenny Jack Sun Farm in Pine Mountain. The reception begins at 5:45 p.m. with the screening to follow at 6:15 p.m. Chris and Jenny Jackson will be on hand to discuss the film at 7:10 p.m. Admission, including soda and snacks, is free.

JAN. 23 – CSU Wind Ensemble Performs
CSU’s Schwob School of Music presents the CSU Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23, in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The ensemble will give a preview of the concert it will perform for the Georgia Music Educators Association State Conference. With sweeping energy and beauty, Juilliard composer Robert Beaser’s raucous Manhattan Roll is followed by Bach’s Fantasia in G.  Faculty artists Lisa Oberlander, Yien Wang and Paul Vaillancourt perform Bernstein’s jazzy Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs. A lush, reflective work by Ticheli, a fun Irish reel by Grainger and a set of dances featuring Cajun, Creole, and Dixieland-style jazz close the concert. JAN. 24 – Faculty Chamber Concert
CSU’s Schwob School of Music presents the second concert of the 2011-2012 Faculty Chamber Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall, featuring Alexander Kobrin, Alex Pershounin, Sergiu Schwartz, Susan Tomkiewicz, Wendy Warner and Ron Wirt. The program includes Andrea Clearfield’s Three Songs for Oboe and Double Bass, Maurice Ravel’s Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello and Francis Poulenc’s Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano. JAN. 30 – Tony and Willis Barnstone Reading
CSU’s Carson McCullers Center will host a Georgia Poetry Circuit event Monday, Jan. 30, at the center, 1519 Stark Ave. The event features a reading by Tony and Willis Barnstone, the father-and-son duo who are accomplished poets and literary critics. The discussion will be at 4 pm., with a reading to follow at 7:30 p.m.
