JAN. 24 - Legacy Live Series to Feature Cantus
The nationally respected male vocal ensemble Cantus will perform 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The event is part of CSU’s Legacy Live concert series and will feature works by Schubert, Whitacre, Poulenc and Weiss. General admission is $20. JAN. 25 - CSU Professors in ‘Scopes Monkey Trial’ Panel Discussion
A trio of Columbus State professors will participate in a panel discussion 7 p.m. Monday in the Springer Opera House about the teaching of evolution in schools. The discussion is a companion event to a three-week run at Springer of the play Inherit the Wind. The play is based on the Scopes monkey trial as it re-enacts the historic courtroom battle 75 years ago between William Jennings Bryan and attorney Clarence Darrrow, who was defending the teaching of evolution by Tennessee public school teacher John Scopes.

CSU professors Brian Schwartz , John Studstill and David Schwimmer will join former college science teacher Donald Moeller and Calvary Christian Schools Headmaster Len McWilliams on the panel, moderated by Columbus Technical College Counselor Ian Bond. JAN. 26 - Forum on Haiti
Columbus State University will host a “Forum on Haiti,” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 in Illges Hall, room 318. Haitian-born French language professor Cecile Accilien will lead a discussion on the current earthquake-caused crisis in the context of Haiti’s history, culture and future. Accilien has written or co-authored multiple works related to her native country, including the book Revolutionary Freedoms: a History of Survival, Strength and Imagination in Haiti. The program is part of the Haiti in Our Backyard film and lecture series presented by CSU’s Department of Modern & Classical Languages’ Cine Club. The forum is free and open to the public. JAN. 26 – ‘Cougars Making Imprints’ Haiti Relief Program
Columbus State’s Office of Student Life and Development invites the community to bring monetary, clothing and nonperishable food donations to the Davidson Student Center’s second-floor game room during a noon-1:30 p.m. program titled “Cougars Making Imprints” and featuring entertainment by DJ 03. The Red Cross will collect and distribute the proceeds to support the Haiti earthquake relief effort. For more information, call 706-568-2273.

JAN. 26 - Visiting Scholar Lecture
Mario Kessler will give a lecture, “Between Lenin and J. Edgar Hoover: Ruth Fischer — Communist and Anti-Communist between Austria, Germany and the U.S., 1895-1961,” 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Spencer Event Hall at CSU’s International House. A research fellow for Potsdam University in Germany, Kessler is teaching at CSU as the 2009-2010 Mildred Miller Fort Foundation Visiting Scholar in European Studies. JAN. 26 - Poetry Reading, Workshop by Robert Morgan
Columbus State’s McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will host a Georgia Poetry Circuit appearance by Robert Morgan on Tuesday. Morgan, whose awards include the James G. Hanes Poetry Prize from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and a North Carolina Literature Award, will lead an informal discussion at 4 p.m. in the McCullers House, 1519 Stark Ave., followed by a 7:30 p.m. poetry reading at CSU’s International House. Born and raised in North Carolina, Morgan, a Kappa Alpha Professor of English at Cornell University, is noted for the novel Gap Creek, a New York Times Best Seller and Oprah Book Club selection. JAN. 28 - NCAA Basketball Doubleheader: Lander
The CSU women’s and men’s basketball squads host Lander for games at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Lumpkin Center. JAN. 28 - CSU Wind Ensemble
The CSU Wind Ensemble, with guest Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, will perform 7:30 p.m. Thursday, in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Additional performers will include CSU faculty members Lisa Oberlander, Sergiu Schwartz and Gila Goldstein, plus students from the school’s violin, viola and cello studios. The concert is free. JAN. 29 – ‘All for Haiti’ Lecture, Reception
The Honors Program at Columbus State University will stage “All for Haiti,” a lecture-reception for Haiti relief 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29 in the Schuster Student Success Center, room 130. The program will involve CSU faculty and Red Cross representatives discussing the earthquake and relief effort. Refreshments will be served and presenters will include CSU President Tim Mescon. Donations will be collected at the door for distribution by the Red Cross. JAN. 29 – Basketball Event for Haiti Relief
Kappa Alpha Psi will host a Kappa iKARE charity basketball skills competition 7-10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29 in the Woodruff Gym The cost of admission — as a spectator or participant — will be $1 and-or a non-perishable food item or items. Kappa iKARE and the Red Cross will administer the proceeds for the Haiti earthquake relief effort. Anyone can participate, as the competition will include a three-point shoot out, two-person relay races and a slam-dunk contest. For more information, call 706-568-2273.

JAN. 31- Faculty Concert to Feature Electroacoustic Sounds
Matthew McCabe, a CSU visiting professor of audio technology, and Albany State woodwind studies professor Russell Brown will present cutting-edge electroacoustic music in full surround sound 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. The show will feature musical pieces by both artists incorporating live instruments, interactive computer performances and 3-D sound diffusion. The event is free. ONGOING - Guest Artists’ ‘Cut, Shuffle and Draw’ Exhibition
Columbus State University’s Department of Art is hosting “Cut, Shuffle and Draw” through Feb. 13 as its opening exhibition of 2010 in the Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery on CSU’s RiverPark campus in downtown Columbus. The show features drawing, sculpture and painting by international and nationally respected artists, including Sang-ah Choi, Scott Anderson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Kara Walker, Carrie Scanga and sculptor Peter Dudek, who joined CSU last fall as a resident artist and collaborated with several CSU students on works that are part of this exhibition.
