JAN. 24-25 - 'Bird Walks' at Oxbow Meadows
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will host guided 'Bird Walks' from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. Visiting biologist Anne Bechard from Louisiana State University will guide the walks along the center's trails. The cost is $4 per person, and the program is designed for adults and children ages 10 and older. Binoculars and bird field guides will be provided. JAN. 24 – Hispanic-Latino Youth College Conference
Columbus State University will host the fourth annual Hispanic-Latino Youth College Conference from 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Saturday in University Hall. This bilingual event targets middle and high school students and their parents with information about preparing for college and scholarships for Hispanic students. Representatives from colleges and universities statewide also will be on hand, and activities include a CSU campus tour, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Co-sponsors are Aramark, the CSU Hispanic Association, Junior Achievement of Georgia and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. JAN. 24 – Oxbow Meadows: Researcher to Recount Galapagos Experiences
Dorsey Burger, a University of Michigan population-environment fellow, will present 'In the Footsteps of Darwin: A Naturalist in the Galapagos,' at 1 p.m. Saturday at Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. Burger, who has worked for the Nature Conservancy in Ecuador, will present a travelogue of his experiences on the Galapagos Islands. Admission is $5. JAN. 25 – Oxbow Meadows: Expert to Describe Mammal Survival in Forest Removal
Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will host 'What Happens in the Forest When the Forest is Removed: How Woodland Mammals Survive Timber Harvests,' a presentation by visiting biologist Anne Bechard, at 1 p.m. Sunday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. Bechard, from Louisiana State University, will describe how some forest creatures not only re-inhabit, but also thrive under timber harvesting conditions. Admission is $5. JAN. 26 – Programs to Feature Award-Winning Poet
Columbus State's McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will host award-winning poet David St. John on Monday for a 4 p.m. discussion in the Smith-McCullers House, 1519 Stark Ave., Columbus and a 7:30 p.m. reading in the International House auditorium at Clearview Circle and University Avenue. Both programs are free.

St. John, who teaches at the University of Southern California, has authored books of poetry including Prism , Study for the World's Body: New and Selected Poems , No Heaven and Hush . His awards include the Discover/The Nation prize, the James D. Phelan Prize, the prix de Rome fellowship in literature, a Guggenheim fellowship and several National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His visit to CSU is a Georgia Poetry Circuit event and sponsored in part by a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts. JAN. 28 - Art Lecture
Columbus State University's Department of Art will present a lecture by Auburn art professor Barb Bondy at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Carpenters Hall at 9th Street and Broadway on CSU's RiverPark Campus. Bondy explores, through her drawings, the correlation of quantum mechanics, cognitive science and how the mind forms an individual's experience of the world. Her work also is part of '34.5 N.W.,' a Jan. 21-Feb. 21 exhibition in CSU's Illges Gallery. Her lecture in Carpenter's Hall is free. For more information, call 706-507-8300.

JAN. 29 – Faculty Research Forums: Columbus' Civil War History and Economic Freedom's Parallel to Business Failure
CSU Libraries will host a pair of presentations in a faculty research forum from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 in the Schwob Library. Associate Professor of History Virginia Causey will present 'The Civil War and Historical Memory: Columbus as a Case Study,' based on the April 1865 Battle of Columbus, Ga., and its aftermath. Separately, business professors Kirk Heriot and Andres Jauregui will present 'The Economic Freedom Index as a Determinant of Firm Deaths: An Empirical Investigation' from findings that correlate economic freedom to firms going out of business, according to 1990-2001 data from all 50 states.

JAN. 30 - Student Guitar Recital

JAN. 30 - Alumni Art Auction
The Columbus State Alumni Association will stage its annual Art Auction fundraiser on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Cunningham Center. Works including collectible and decorative paintings, sculptures and more can be previewed starting at 7 p.m. The auction will begin at 8 p.m. Wine, cheese and hors doeuvres will be served.
