JAN. 9 - NCAA Basketball Doubleheader: North Georgia
The CSU women’s and men’s basketball squads host North Georgia for games at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lumpkin Center. Admission prices are $5 for adults; $3 for students/kids ; and free for ages 5 and under and CSU students, faculty and staff with ID. JAN. 10 - Faculty Concert
Columbus State Schwob School of Music faculty members Susan Tomkiewicz and Ron Wirt will present a concert of solo and chamber music featuring a fusion of classical and popular styles at 4 p.m. Sunday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The pair will be joined by CSU pianist Susan Hoskins and guest flutist Christine Beard from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The concert is free. JAN. 11 - Spring Semester Opens
Monday is the first day of classes for spring 2010 at Columbus State. The semester will close with May 4 as the final day of classes ahead of a week of final exams and a May 15 spring graduation ceremony.

JAN. 12-FEB. 13 - Guest Artists’ Exhibition
Columbus State University’s Department of Art presents “Cut, Shuffle and Draw” as its opening exhibition of the new year, Jan. 12-Feb. 13, in the Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery on CSU’s RiverPark campus in downtown Columbus. The show features drawing, sculpture and painting by international and nationally respected artists, including Sang-ah Choi, Scott Anderson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Kara Walker, Carrie Scanga and sculptor Peter Dudek, who joined CSU last fall as a resident artist and collaborated with several CSU students on works that are part of this exhibition. JAN. 12 - Faculty Concert to Feature Saxophonist Amy Griffiths
Columbus State Schwob School of music faculty saxophonist Amy Griffiths will perform 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Schwob school collaborative pianist Yien Wang will accompany Griffiths for works by Schumann and Demersseman as well as contemporary works by Harbison and JacobTV. Additional Schwob school faculty members Lisa Oberlander , Alex Pershounin and Paul Vaillancourt also will perform.

JAN. 14 - MLK Jr. Day Observance at Columbus State
Columbus State will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 in the Davidson Student Center auditorium. JAN. 14 - Reception, Gallery Talk for Guest Artists’ Exhibition
Columbus State’s Department of Art will host a reception 5:30-7 p..m Thursday, Jan. 14 in the Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery for “Cut, Shuffle and Draw,” an exhibition by guest artists through Feb. 13. One of the artists, Sang-ah Choi, will give a 6 p.m. gallery talk as part of the program. The South Korea-born Choi, who works in New York City and Portland, is renowned for blending East and West, kitsch and classical, contemplative and commercial, and plasmic and plastic. She uses glitter, holograms, paint and sumi ink to create swirling, intricate patterns of bubbles, Venuses with cartoon eyes, and Taoist nature symbols for immortality — all interwoven into candy-hued landscapes. The CSU exhibition features her drawings, large-scale pop-up paper sculptures and pop-up books. Admission is free. Illges Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p..m. Saturday.
