MARCH 21-22 – Weekend Bird Walks
The Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center is hosting weekend “Bird Walks” from 8-9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. The program is free and designed for adults and children ages 10 and older. Binoculars and bird field guides are provided. Reservations are required. MARCH 21 - NCAA Softball Doubleheader: USC Aiken
Columbus State will host USC Aiken for an NCAA softball doubleheader on Saturday at Lady Cougar Field. MARCH 21 - Astronomy Night
Columbus State’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center will stage an Astronomy Night program of stargazing and planet viewing on Saturday at the center, 701 Front St., Columbus. MARCH 21 - Oxbow Meadows Program: 'Attracting Hummingbirds …'
Columbus State’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will present “Attracting Hummingbirds, Orioles and Nectar Feeders to Your Yard” in a pair of sessions Saturday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. A 10 a.m. program for adults will be followed by a session starting 1 p.m. for adults and children 10 and older. The demonstration will cover ways to lure birds into the yard. MARCH 22 - Choral, Percussion Ensembles to Perform ‘Les Noces’
The CSU Choral Union and Percussion Ensemble, joined by four vocal soloists and pianists Gila Goldstein, Tracy Xian and Yien Wang, will present Stravinsky’s Les Noces at 4 p.m. Sunday in RiverCenter’s Bill Heard Theatre. The program also features Ballet Mecanique by Georg Antheil, accompanied by Fernand Leger’s avant-garde film of the same title from 1923. Directing the ensembles will be Constantina Tsolainou, the Paul S. and Jean R. Amos Faculty Chair in Music and Director of Choral Activities, and Paul Vaillancourt, leader of the CSU Percussion Ensemble. MARCH 23 - Voice Studio Recital
Students of Earl Coleman, the Schwob School of Music’s William and Isabelle Curry Distinguished Faculty Chair in Voice, will present An Afternoon of Arts Songs and Arias at 7:30 p.m. Monday in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. The vocalists, including winners of local, regional, national and international auditions, competitions and scholarships, will perform operatic arias, arts songs and musical theatre selections. MARCH 26 - ‘Big Green Fest’ to Focus on Environment-Friendly Practices
A Columbus State University student organization, Students for a Sustainable World, will hold a Big Green Fest, an environmental fair, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at the main campus clock tower. Organizations from throughout Columbus will host exhibits and table-top displays aimed at promoting environment-friendly practices.

The event is open to the public at no charge.

Presenters at the fair will include representatives from Trees Columbus, the Georgia Forestry Council, Coalition for Southern Growth, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wiley Publishers and Fort Benning. MARCH 26 - CSU Philharmonic to Perform
CSU Philharmonic will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Conductor and Schwob School of Music Director Fred Cohen also will discuss Mozart’s work during the program. MARCH 27 - CSU Day
Columbus State will hold its 15th annual CSU Day as a thank-you to its supporters on Friday, March 27. Volunteers, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. will place red, white and blue signs displaying “We are Partners with Columbus State University” in front of homes and businesses that have contributed to CSU’s 2008-2009 Annual Fund. MARCH 27 – Film Screening by Mark Street
New York City-based experimental filmmaker Mark Street will present a screening of a series of his short films from 7-9 pm, Friday, March 27 in the CSU Corn Center for the Visual Arts Sculpture Garden downtown Columbus .

The film series, Experiments in Urban Fascination and Alienation, presents Street’s works designed to expand the viewer’s perception of an urban landscape. Individual titles are “Fulton Fish Market,” “Rockaway,” “Guiding Fictions,” “Alone, Apart: the Dream Reveals a Waking Day,” “Blue Movie” and “Trailer Trash.' CSU art professor Robbie Land said Street “works in various unconventional film methods including hand painting on film, working with found film footage and constructing documentary and narrative films that create a projected visual diary of his environments.” Street, who also teaches in Fordham University’s Visual Art Department, has had his work screened internationally via the New York Museum of Modern Art, Anthology Film Archives, Tribeca Film Festival and San Francisco Cinematheque.

MARCH 27-29 - Carson McCullers Film Festival
Columbus State’s McCullers Center for Writes and Musicians and the Columbus Public Library will present a Carson McCullers Film Festival Friday through Sunday, March 27-29 at the library, 3000 Macon Road, Columbus. The festival will feature major film adaptations of McCullers’ work:

• Reflections in a Golden Eye with Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando and Julie Harris, 7 p.m. Friday

• The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter with Alan Arkin, Cicely Tyson, Stacy Keach, and Sondra Locke, 2 p.m. Saturday

• Wunderkind, a short film by New York director Lauren Rosen and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe with Vanessa Redgrave and Keith Carradine, 7 p.m. Saturday

• The Member of the Wedding with Ethel Waters, Julie Harris and Brandon de Wilde, 2 p.m. Sunday

In addition to the film screenings, visitors can tour the Carson McCullers childhood home at 1519 Stark Ave., from 4-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. All programs are free and open to the public and part of a larger celebration across Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi opening the Southern Literary Trail . The program will begin in the Lumpkin Center and activities will include a tour of campus and an opportunity to speak with current CSU students and professors. Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music will present the Shanghai String Quartet in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Formed in Shanghai, China, the quartet is known for passionate musicality, virtuosic technique and multicultural innovations. The concert is part of the Schwob School’s “Legacy Live” series. Ongoing – Group Exhibition: ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’
Columbus State’s Department of Art is hosting “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” a ceramics exhibition by guest artists through April 18 in the Corn Center for Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery in downtown Columbus. Participating artists are Val Cushing, Chris Gustin, Wayne Higby, John Jessiman, Ji-Wan Joo, Karen Karnes, Jackson Li, Brad Schwieger, Don Reitz, Allan Rosenbaum, Chris Staley, Lydia Thompson and Peter Voulkos. A closing reception is set for 6-7 p.m. April 17 in the gallery.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday. The Corn Center is located at 6 West 10th St. in downtown Columbus.
