MARCH 28 – Concert by Guitarist David Russell
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a concert by Grammy-winning classical guitarist
David Russell at 7:30 p.m. Friday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Russell’s CD “Aire
Latino” earned a 2005 Grammy in the category of best instrumental soloist in classical
music. Admission is $10 and half-price for military personnel, senior citizens and

MARCH 29 – Visitation Day for Prospective Students
The CSU Recruitment Office will hold a visitation day for high school seniors and
their parents from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday. The event will begin in the Lumpkin
Center and activities will include a tour of campus and an opportunity to speak with
current CSU students and professors. CSU also offers daily tours 2 p.m. Monday through

MARCH 29 - Foreign Language Fair-Competition
Columbus University’s Department of Modern and Classical Languages will host its
annual Foreign Language Fair from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday on the second floor of the
Davidson Student Center. About 200 foreign language students from public and private
middle schools and high schools in Muscogee County will compete in vocabulary, written
and oral poetry, food, music and various creative projects in Spanish, French, German,
Latin, Japanese and Chinese languages. An awards ceremony, announcing first, second
and third places in each language and category will conclude the event. For more information,

MARCH 30 - Student Violin Recital
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a student violin recital by Michelle Cardenas

MARCH 31-APRIL 5 - Homecoming 2008 Festivities
CSU’s Homecoming 2008 celebration will run kick off Monday and continue through the
week with a series of competitions and and events for students, faculty and staff.
Themed “Remember the Cougars: Hittiing Strong 50 Years Long,” festivities will culminate
with a Saturday, April 5 baseball doubleheader at Ragsdale Field. Pregame activities
will include a hamburger cook off. Between games, the homecoming court will be recognized
and competition winners among student organizations will be announced. Weekend activities
also will complement CSU’s 50th Anniversary Open House. Preceding events during the
week will be highlighted by a Mr. and Miss Housing Pageant , Paintball Challenge ,
Dodgeball Tournament , Homecoming Ball and more. For more information, including

MARCH 31 – CSU Percussion Ensemble to Perform
The CSU Percussion Ensemble will perform the world premiere of a Nico Muhly composition
and other Muhly works at 7:30 p.m. Monday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Muhly, 26,
is CSU’s Carson McCullers Center for Writing and Musicians Resident Composer in Percussion
and also has lent his skills as performer, arranger and conductor to other musicians,
including Lou Reed and Björk, and has composed a cantata based on Strunk and White’s

APRIL 1 – News Conference to Announce Information Technology Initiative
for the Defense Industry CSU will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday to
announce an initiative to develop a computer science curriculum at CSU to produce
graduates proficient in modeling, simulation and gaming technology for the defense
industry, in partnership with Fort Benning and other local partners. The announcement
will be made in the Cunningham Center’s Blanchard Hall. For more information, call

APRIL 1 - CSU Trombone Choir and Trombone Octet to Perform
The CSU Trombone Choir and Trombone Octet, directed by Schwob School of Music professor
Bradley Palmer, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Admission

APRIL 2 - Poetry Reading, Discussion with Michael Meyerhofer
Prize-winning poet Michael Meyerhofer will discuss and read from his works in a pair
of programs at CSU on Wednesday: 4 p.m. in the Smith-McCullers House, 1519 Stark Ave.,
Columbus and 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Commerce and Technology auditorium .
Both programs are free and open to the public. A recipient of the National Poetry Review’s Laureate Prize for Poetry, Meyerhofer has authored three prize-winning poetry collections and his work also has appeared in Arts & Letters, Green Mountains Review, Fugue, North American Review, Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine and others. APRIL 2 - Asian Night Celebration
CSU’s Center for International Education and the International Network will stage
an “Asian Night Celebration at 6 p.m. Wednesday in CSU’s International House at University
Avenue and Clearview Circle. The program will involve demonstrations of traditional
Asian dress, foods, and calligraphy and origami. Participants will include visiting
Kiryu, Japan high school students, who are touring the region as guests of CSU, Aflac

APRIL 2 -Trombone ‘Quatour du Sud’ Concert
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a concert by Quatuor du Sud at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 2 in RiverCenter’sLegacy Hall. The quartet includes professors Bradley
Palmer , Demondrae Thurman Doug Bristol and freelance bass trombonist Jeff Koonce.

APRIL 3 - History Forum to Explore Chattahoochee River
CSU environmental science professor Roger Brown will present “Environmental History
of the Chattahoochee River” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at the W.C. Bradley Company,
1017 Front Avenue, Columbus. The program is free and part of CSU’s Red Clay, Whitewater
and Blues series of local history forums. On Saturday, April 5 a related 10 a.m.-noon

APRIL 3-6 - CSU Theatre to Stage ‘Blood Wedding’
CSU Theatre will stage ‘Blood Wedding” April 3-6 at CSU Theatre on the Park in downtown
Columbus. Show times are 7:30 p.m Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The play, written by Federico Garcia Lorca in 1932 and set in Spain, explores the
intertwining of social status with marriage and features poetry, music and imagery
of Spanish culture. The production involves a 22-member cast directed by professor
Becky Becker and Spanish-classical guitar accompaniment by Robert Sharpe. Tickets
are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, children, active military and CSU alumni and

APRIL 4 – Children’s Performance by Atlanta Drumline
The Atlanta Drumline will give a performance, designed for young children as a “music and movement” experience,
from 10-11 a.m. Friday, April 4 in the Lumpkin Center. Hosted by CSU’s Child Care
Resource and Referral Center of West Georgia, the event is part of the university’s
50th anniversary celebration and CSU’s observance of the National Association for
the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child .
The Atlanta Drumline includes some of Atlanta’s most talented young percussionists and was featured in the 2002 movie Drumline and events such as Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Hawks home games. The audience at will be comprised of 2,000-2,500 children from local head start programs, elementary schools and area child care centers. Admission also is free and open to the public. CSU will present a free concert by the Swingin’ Medallions at 7 p.m. Friday, April

The CSU Jazz Band, directed by professor Shirantha Beddage, will perform selections

APRIL 5 – 5K Race and One Mile Fun Run
The Columbus State University Alumni Association will stage a 5K race and one-mile
fun run starting 8 a.m. Saturday, April 5. The event is part of CSU’s 50th anniversary
celebration and opens with the fun run open to ages 19 and under. The 5K race is open
to competitors 14 and older with competitive age divisions up to 70 and over. The
course begins at the Lumpkin Center, travels around campus and ends at the Thomas
Y. Whitley Clock Tower. Trophies will be awarded to the overall and age group winners,
medallions go to second and third-place finishers and all participants receive a commemorative
T-shirt. Registration fees prior to March 29 are $20 and $15 for CSU students. Same-day
fees are $25 and $20 for ages 12 and under.

APRIL 5 - ‘Spring Bird Walk’ at Oxbow Meadows
CSU’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will host the second of three “Spring
Bird Walks” from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, April 5. Experienced birders will guide the walk
around Oxbow Meadows at 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. The program also will include
discussion on bird watching and effective bird feeders for home. The program is geared
to families with children ages seven and up. Participants should arrive by 8:45 a.m.
Binoculars and field guides will be provided, or guests can bring their own gear.

APRIL 5 – Pet Show at Intramural Field
CSU’s Pre-Veterinary Medicine Association will stage a pet show at 10 a.m. Saturday,
April 5 at the Mock Pavilion and adjacent intramural field . Registration begins at
9 a.m. as pet owners can enter any 6-month-or-older pet on a leash with proof of rabies
shots. A $1 per pet entry fee covers supplies and prizes and benefits the association,

APRIL 5 - 50th Anniversary Open House-Homecoming Festivities
CSU will stage various activities for the community throughout Saturday, April 5
as part of a 50th anniversary open house and homecoming festivities. The events include:
• One-mile fun run and 5K road race
• CSU Staff Council craft fair and U.S. Army Expo , all day
• Pre-Veterinary Medical Association pet show, 9-11 a.m. Intramural Field
• “History of CSU” forum with faculty panelists, 11:30 a.m., Davidson Student Center
auditorium
• Fort Benning Silver Wings parachute team demonstration, 1 p.m. Ragsdale Field
• “Block Party on Broadway” and RiverPark Campus Open House featuring the Corn Center
for the Visual Arts, Theatre on the Park and Schwob School of Music, begins
at 4 p.m.

APRIL 5 - Blood Wedding Companion Lecture and ‘Picnic on the Park’
CSU Spanish language professor Jose Barroco-Castro will give a talk titled “Lorca’s
Theory of Duende, Flamenco Culture and Poetics” at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at CSU
Theatre on The Park in downtown Columbus. The program, free and open to the public,
is a companion lecture to the CSU Theatre production of Federico Garcia Lorca’s ‘Blood
Wedding.” Curtain time that evening is 7:30 p.m., and, guests are welcome to join
a “Picnic on the Park” between programs by bringing their own food for dinner and
conversation outside the theatre in the upper lobby. Barroso-Castro, a native of
Spain, will provide insight on both Spanish culture and the playwright Lorca, who
wrote Blood Wedding in 1932, just four years before he was killed in the beginning
