NOV. 14 - Student Piano Recital

NOV. 14 – Expert to Speak on Georgia’s Important Bird Areas
Charlie Muise, coordinator of Georgia ‘s Important Bird Area Conservation program, will give a talk at 7 p.m. Friday in Stanley Hall 205. The program will cover the state’s 49 Important Bird Areas, including Fort Benning, which is home to the Bachman’s sparrow and red-cockaded woodpecker. Muise also will talk about factors making a location “important for wild birds.” The event, presented by CSU’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, is free and open to public. NOV. 14 and 16 - CSU to Host NCAA Women’s Soccer Regional Games
Columbus State University will host first and second round games in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional finals for women’s soccer on Friday and Sunday at the Walden Soccer Complex on the CSU campus.

Action opens with Georgia College vs. Catawba at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner of this match will face top-seeded CSU at 1 p.m Sunday.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for students , and $2 for children age 4-12.

Meanwhile in Jefferson City, Tenn., second-seeded Carson Newman will host the other Southeast regional bracket. Winners from both sites will advance to the regional finals and quarterfinal rounds Nov. 21 and 23 in Winter Park, Fla.

NOV. 15 - Reservation Deadline for Nov. 18 ‘Career Planning Event’
Saturday is the deadline to reserve a seat for an upcoming “Career Planning Event” set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 at CSU’s Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center.

The free event is designed for working professionals interested in continuing their education, active duty military and their spouses, prospective graduate students and those interested in a career degree or online, weekend and evening programs. NOV. 15 – Bird Banding Workshop at Oxbow Meadows
CSU’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will stage a bird banding demonstration from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus.

Charlie Muise, coordinator of Georgia’S Important Bird Area conservation program, will put up his mist nets and catch some of Oxbow’s wild birds for “bird in the hand” looks at northern cardinals, Carolina wrens, American goldfinches, mourning doves, downy woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers, tufted titmice, mockingbirds and more. NOV. 15-16 – NCAA Women’s Basketball: CSU Tip-Off Classic
CSU’s women’s basketball squad will compete with three other teams in the CSU Tip-Off Classic on Saturday and Sunday in the Lumpkin Center. The match-ups are Georgia College and State vs. Mobile College , CSU vs. Tougaloo College , Georgia College and State vs. Tougaloo College and CSU vs. Mobile College . NOV. 15 – Guest Bass Trombone Recital
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a recital by bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. NOV. 16 – Percussion Ensemble to Perform
The CSU Percussion Ensemble will present its annual fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The program includes Eric Moe’s “I Have Only One Itching Desire,” based on the drumming from the Jimi Hendrix song “Fire,” a couple of xylophone rags from the 1920s, featuring soloists Diana Trefi and Kelsey Adams, several world premieres by composer Jim David, including “Locomotive Gerion” for percussion orchestra and solo saxophone, featuring CSU professor Amy Griffiths. The ensemble will close with Frank Zappa’s “The Black Page.”

NOV. 20 - Music Professor to Open ‘Last Lecture’ Series
CSU music professor Kristen Hansen will give a talk titled “Use More Air” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. The event, which will close with a 7 p.m. reception, is free and open to the public and opens the CSU Student Government Association’s Last Lecture Series.

The series is inspired by, and named after, a famous 2007 speech by the late Randy Pausch. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, the Carnegie Mellon computer science professor conceived and delivered a final lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” which became known as “The Last Lecture,” adapted later into a New York Times best-selling book by the same title. Like Pausch, CSU’s SGA has framed its lecture series around the hypothetical “final talk” concept, based on the question, “What wisdom would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?” For more information, call the SGA office at 706-568-2403.

NOV. 20 – Guest Speaker: ‘Art, Entertainment and the Infosphere’
CSU’s Department of Art will host a lecture, “Art, Entertainment and the Infosphere,” by University of Georgia art professor Mark Callahan at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in Carpenters Hall, 4 West 9th St., on CSU’s RiverPark campus. Callahan is the artistic director of ideas for Creative Exploration, an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at UGA. His talk at CSU is free and open to the public. NOV. 20 – CSU Wind Orchestra to Perform
The CSU Wind Orchestra will perform a variety of original works for the wind band through the 20th Century at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. CSU’s Schwob School of Music will hold its 12th annual Conductors Workshop on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22 at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. The workshop targets conductors of all levels, with limited spots for full participation and unlimited room for auditors . The clinicians are Gary Green, professor of music and director of bands for the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami; H. Robert Reynolds, principal conductor of the wind ensemble at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California; and Robert W. Rumbelow, in his 13th year as conductor and director of wind ensemble activities for CSU’s Schwob School of Music.
