NOV. 8 – Flute, Piano Concert
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present guest flutist Amy Likar in concert with Schwob School of Music Pianist Yien Wang at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. NOV. 9 – Poetry Reading at McCullers House
Poet Cecelia Woloch will read from her work at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 in the Smith-McCullers House, 1519 Stark Ave., Columbus. Admission is free and open to the public. Woloch, the 2004 Georgia Author of the Year in Poetry and a contributor to Garrison Keillor’s Good Poems for Hard Times, has published several books of poems since 1997. She also is founding director of Summer Poetry in Idyllwild and of The Paris Poetry Workshop, and lectures in the creative writing program at the University of Southern California. NOV. 10 – International Film Screening: ‘Persepolis’
CSU’s Center for International Education will screen the 2007 French film 'Persepolis' at 7 p.m. Monday in the CSU International House Sara D. Spencer Event Hall. The movie is an animated coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl during the Islamic Revolution. Admission is free. For more information, call 706-565-4036.

NOV. 10 – Columbus Brass to Perform
The Columbus Brass, an ensemble of CSU faculty artists, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. NOV. 11 - Veterans Day Program
Carmen Cavezza, executive director of CSU’s Cunningham Center for Leadership Development, will speak on “Legacy of Honor and Service: A tribute to our military’s finest,” as part of university’s Veterans Day Celebration and Remembrance Observance, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Davidson Student Center auditorium. NOV. 11 – ‘Violating Sanctions’ Lecture Series: Philippines
American activist and journalist Kelly Hayes-Raitt will share stories from victims of toxic waste from military bases in the Philippines, in a lecture at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in CSU’s Schwob Library. The lecture is the third in the series “Violating Sanctions: An American Women’s Listening Tour through the Axis of Evil” by Hayes-Raitt, the CSU McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians’ 2008 Marguerite and Lamar Smith Writing Fellow. NOV. 11 – Art History Lecture by Guest Speaker
CSU’s Department of Art will host a lecture, “Curiosity, Complexity and the Mystery of the Ancient Maya,” by art historian Laura Amrhein from the faculty of the University of Arkansas Little Rock at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Carpenters Hall at 9th Street and Broadway on CSU’s RiverPark Campus. NOV. 11 – Four-Part Lecture Series on Constitution to Open
The public is invited to the first of four free lecture-discussions titled “The Constitution Then and Now: What it Means to Us and Why” from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in CSU’s Center for Commerce and Technology, room 237. Presented by the One Columbus E. Pluribus Unum committee and CSU, the series is designed to make the U.S. Constitution better understood and more accessible.

CSU political science professor Tom Dolan will present the series, addressing the Constitution’s history and the federal-style government it produced, plus the development of civil liberties and civil rights and what Americans should expect from their government in the future. NOV. 12 –Veterans’ Counseling Services
Workshop for Prospective Students Columbus State University’s Counseling Center will showcase its services for students who are military service veterans at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 in rooms 256 and 258 of the Davidson Student Center. NOV. 12 - Poetry Workshop, Reading
Columbus State University's Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will feature award-winning poet Michael Waters in a pair of events on Wednesday. A 4 p.m. poetry workshop at the Smith-McCullers House at 1519 Stark Avenue will be followed by a 6:30 p.m. poetry reading in CSU’s Center for Commerce and Technology auditorium. Waters has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fulbright Foundation, as well as Individual Artist awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and four Pushcart Prizes. His recent books include Darling Vulgarity, a 2006 finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems. He also edited the new edition of Contemporary American Poetry . He teaches in the New England College Master of Fine Arts Program and at Monmouth University .

NOV. 13 – Q&A Session with Veterans Affairs Representative
CSU’s Office of Veterans Affairs will host a “Question and Answer “ session with Michael Rogers from the Atlanta regional office for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at the CSU Veterans Affairs Office located in the University Hall annex. - NOV. 13 - USG to Debut ‘Apply to College’ Event for High School Students
The University System of Georgia will stage an “Apply to College” event from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at Hardaway High School, 2901 College Drive, Columbus. The event is open to all high school seniors, as college admissions workers will be on hand to help guide the students through the college admissions process. Participating students will have the opportunity to apply to Georgia colleges and universities, using the Web site http://www.GAcollege411.org. Co-sponsors are the Georgia Department of Education, the Georgia Foundation of Independent Colleges, the Georgia Student Finance Commission and the Technical College System of Georgia. NOV. 13 - Iraq War Commander-Military Historian to Speak at RiverCenter
Retired Army Col. Peter R. Mansoor, a respected military historian who recently returned from Iraq where he served as a high ranking official, will give a public lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Mansoor’s presentation, “The G.I. Comes of Age: The Evolution of American Infantry,” is sponsored by Columbus State University’s History and Geography Department and is free and open to the public.

Mansoor, who served as executive officer to Commanding Gen. David Petraeus in 2007-2008, will sign copies of his new book Baghdad at Sunrise, which will be on sale as part of a pre-lecture reception starting 5:30 p.m. in the RiverCenter Grand Lobby. The book, described by Publishers Weekly as ‘balanced, perceptive, and merciless,” tells the story of a U.S. brigade in Baghdad from 2004-2005. Currently the General Raymond Mason Chair of Military History at Ohio State University, Mansoor proposed the 2007 surge in Iraq as founding director of the U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center. NOV. 14 – Expert to Speak on Georgia’s Important Bird Areas
Charlie Muise, coordinator of the Atlanta Audubon Society’s Georgia Important Bird Area conservation program, will give a talk at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 in Stanley Hall room 205. The program will cover the state’s “Important Bird Areas,” including Fort Benning, which is home to the Bachman’s Sparrow and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. NOV. 15 - Reservation Deadline for Nov. 18 ‘Career Planning Event’
Saturday, Nov. 15 is the deadline to reserve a seat for an upcoming “Career Planning Event” at CSU. The university is offering mid-career professionals an opportunity to ponder their next move in the program, set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 at CSU’s Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. The Career Planning Event is designed for working professionals interested in continuing their education, active duty military and their spouses, prospective graduate students and those interested in a career degree or online, weekend and evening programs. Professors and career-planning pros will discuss all degree options, including the Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program, Financial aid and admissions counselors also will be on hand. NOV. 15 – Bird Banding Demonstration at Oxbow Meadows
CSU’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will stage a bird banding demonstration from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus. Charlie Muise, coordinator of the Atlanta Audubon Society’s Georgia Important Bird Area conservation program, will put up his mist nets and catch some of Oxbow’s wild birds for “bird in the hand” looks at northern cardinals, Carolina wrens, American goldfinches, mourning doves, downy woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers, tufted titmice, mockingbirds and more. NOV. 15-16 – NCAA Women’s Basketball: CSU Tip-Off Classic
CSU’s women’s basketball squad will compete with three other teams in the CSU Tip-Off Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15-16 in the Lumpkin Center. The match-ups are Georgia College and State vs. Mobile College , CSU vs. Tougaloo College , Georgia College and State vs. Tougaloo College and CSU vs. Mobile College . NOV. 15 – Guest Bass Trombone Recital
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a recital by bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Warburton, one of England’s leading bass trombone soloists, will present standard bass trombone repertoire and new works originally written for him.
