NOV. 1 – Rite of Passage Convocation
Schwob Memorial Library hosts a Rite of Passage Convocation at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 on the library’s first floor. Come hear Columbus State faculty recently promoted to the highest academic rank — professors of English Nick Norwood and Susan Hrach  — share brief insights about their teaching experiences, research or, more generally, life in academia. Free. Refreshments will be served beginning at noon. 

NOV. 1 – Violin Recital
CSU’s Schwob School of Music hosts a recital by Diego Gabete, a student of Sergiu Schwartz, CSU’s William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Violin, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. NOV. 2 – Carson McCullers Center Presentation
Columbus State’s Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, in conjunction with the English Department Faculty Lecture Series, features Courtney George, the center’s interim director, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at the center, 1519 Stark Ave. George will present, “‘What Would the Music Be Like?: Revolutionary Music in Alice Walker’s Meridian.” Free. NOV. 3 – Graduate School Expo at Cunningham Center
Columbus State’s Graduate School is hosting a Graduate School Expo from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 in CSU’s Cunningham Center. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about graduate school opportunities at CSU, and talk to representatives from more than 50 graduate degrees and certificate programs in 16 study areas. NOV. 3 – Harvest in the Meadows Fall Festival
Columbus State’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center hosts its fall festival, Harvest in the Meadows, from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. There will be a reptile show, games, bouncy house, raptor release, telescope viewing and a kiss-an-alligator contest. Additional attractions are a caramel apple bar, face and hair painting, pony rides, petting zoo and appearances by Smokey the Bear and Cody the Cougar. Frank N Gator, a scarecrow-alligator, is the mascot for Harvest in the Meadows festival. NOV. 4 – CSU’s Choral Union and the CSU Philharmonic Perform Mozart
CSU’s Schwob School of Music presents Choral Union and the CSU Philharmonic in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. They will be performing Mozart’s Requiem K. 626 – his last work. CSU’s Paul S. and Jean R. Amos Faculty Chair in Music, Constantina Tsolainou, will conduct. Free. NOV. 5 – Aspen Trio – Legacy Live Concert
CSU’s Schwob School of Music presents the Aspen Trio as part of its LegacyLive concert series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. This program includes the music of Martinu and Dohnanyi. Admission is $20. NOV. 5 – Carson McCullers Center: Dave Smith

NOV. 6 – NCAA Men’s Basketball: CSU vs. Carver Bible

NOV. 6 — Col. Ralph Puckett Lecture
As part of Columbus State’s year-long Vietnam: Reflections on An Era remembrance, retired Army Col.Ralph Puckett will give a lecture at noon Tuesday, Nov. 6 in CSU’s Schwob Library. Puckett, of Columbus, was an inaugural inductee of the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

NOV. 7– Nicholas Carr Lecture on Impact of Technology
Columbus State’s International Learning Community is sponsoring a lecture by author Nicholas G. Carr at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 in the Student Recreation Center’s room 202. Carr, the author of The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, a 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist and a New York Times bestseller, will discuss the role and impact of technology in today’s society. NOV. 8 – Tyler Fleming Lecture: “Becoming ‘African’ in America”
As part of its Master of Arts in History Race, Ethnicity, and Society Lecture Series, Columbus State’s Department of History and Geography is sponsoring a lecture by Tyler Fleming, CSU assistant professor of history, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Schwob Memorial Library. Fleming, who held the Carter G. Woodson Fellowship in African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia, will lecture about, “Becoming ‘African’ in America: The Case of South African Jazz Performers in America, 1960-1980.” Free. NOV. 8 – Former Auburn Football Player Lewis Colbert to Speak
As part of Columbus State’s Disability Week observance, former Auburn University and NFL punter Lewis Colbert will speak at noon Thursday, Nov. 8 in CSU’s University Hall. His book, Lewis Colbert: The Unlikeliest Tiger,. tells of how Colbert, born with a severely misshapen club foot which required numerous surgeries and constant metal bracing, overcame his disability to become Auburn’s starting punter from 1982-1985. During that period Colbert set Auburn career punting records that still stand today for most punts and most punting yards and earned first-team All-American in 1985, his fourth season as Auburn’s starting punter.

NOV. 8 – Charles Vernon and CSU’s Wind Ensemble
CSU’s Schwob School of Music hosts a performance by Charles Vernon and the CSU Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Vernon, the legendary bass trombonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, performs a special concert with two CSU ensembles. Free. NOV. 12– CSU Brass Quintet
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will host a concert by Columbus State’s faculty brass quintet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The quintet will perform the first half of the concert in the traditional brass quintet setting and will then be joined by other faculty and the school’s top brass students for a large brass ensemble performance. Free. NOV. 12– Red Cross Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 in the multipurpose room of the Student Recreation Center. American Red Cross T-shirts will be given to all donors. NOV. 14 – NCAA Women’s Basketball: CSU vs. Shorter
Columbus State’s women’s basketball team plays Shorter College at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 in the Lumpkin Center. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for non-CSU students and free for ages 5 and younger and CSU students, faculty and staff with ID. NOV. 14 – Robert Mann Lecture on Political Advertising
Columbus State’s College of the Arts and Department of Communication Department are hosting author Robert Mann, former press secretary to U.S. Sen. Russell Long and currently Manship Chair in Journalism at Louisiana State University, who will speak on the impact of one of the most famous political ads in history on political campaigns. In a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 in the Studio Theatre of CSU’s Riverside Theatre Complex. The topic of his lecture is the same as a book he authored, Daisy Petals and Mushroom Clouds: LBJ, Goldwater, and the Ad that Changed American Politics. His lecture is also part of Columbus State’s yearlong Vietnam: Reflections on An Era remembrance. Free.

NOV. 15 – Cello Recital

NOV. 15– CSU Wind Orchestra
CSU’s Schwob School of Music hosts a concert by the Wind Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. The concert, titled “Distant Lands,” takes a musical ride through Korea, France, Japan, the “lost city of the Incas”—Machu Picchu —and even a detour into Alice’s Wonderland.  Music is by Milhaud, Chance, Del Tredici and others. Free. NOV. 16 – CSU Wind Ensemble
CSU’s Schwob School of Music helps kick off the 15th annual Conductors Workshop with a concert at 7 p.m.Friday, Nov. 16 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Northwestern University’s Director of Bands Mallory Thompson and University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Director of Bands Steven Davis guest conduct works by Whitacre and Bernstein to accompany Reynaldo Hahn’s chamber work Le Bal du Beatrice d’Este and Michael Daugherty’sBells for Stokowski, a tribute to the legendary Philadelphia Orchestra and the Disney movie Fantasia conductor.Free. NOV. 17– Gusto!
CSU’s Schwob School of Music presents Gusto!, a five-course dinner celebrating the music and cuisine of North and South America, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov.17 at the RiverMill Event Centre. Schwob students will perform music from the same culture as the food being served. Proceeds from the event benefit the Schwob School of Music scholarship fund. Attire is business dress. NOV. 17 – Bacteria Monitoring Workshop|
Columbus State’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center hosts a Bacterial Monitoring Workshop to teach volunteers how to monitor E. coli levels in their streams. E. coli is an indicator organism often used to assess water quality. Monitoring levels of E. coli can help identify sources of pollution. NOV. 30 – Songs of Victor Ullmann by Paula Sides and Jonathan Gale
A Columbus State University alumna, soprano, Paula Sides, and pianist Jonathan Gale present a lecture recital on the songs of Victor Ullman at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Ullmann, a student of the famous composer, Arnold Schoenberg, died in a concentration camp in Germany during the Nazi regime.  Sides, a Gold Medal winner at London's Royal Music Conservatory, is currently performing with Opera North in England and has presented this program for Dame Solti, widow of the world-famous conductor Sir George Solti.
