OCT. 14 - Oxbow Meadows Second Sunday: Outdoor Photography
Columbus State University’s Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will present “Outdoor Photography” as its Second Sunday Series program for Oct. 14. The program begins at 2 p.m. and repeats at 3 p.m. Presenter Joe Maher will demonstrate how to capture photos of nature and scenes from outdoor adventures. The program will explore creative options and address common issues related to photography in environments potentially damaging to equipment. Admission is $2 per person and free for ages 3 and under. OCT. 15-16 - Women’s Leadership Development Conference
The Leadership Institute at CSU’s Cunningham Center for Leadership Development will stage its third annual Women’s Leadership Development Conference on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15-16. Addressing the theme “Authentic Leadership: Develop - Empower - Inspire,” will be speakers and workshop leaders including a popular author and nationally respected executives with a track record of workplace achievement.

Keynote presenters are AirTran Senior Marketing Manager Samantha Johnson , storyteller/author Carmen Agra Deedy , TSYS Chairman of the Board & CEO Phil Tomlinson and U.S. Army Surgeon General Gale S. Pollock .

Providing practical, hands-on training immediately applicable both professionally and personally, the conference is designed to empower and enhance leadership skills for the “21st Century woman.” The conference costs $349 per person. OCT. 15 - TAD Forum Finale at Midland Middle School
CSU’s D. Abbott Turner College of Business will conduct the final in a series of forums to educate local voters about Tax Allocation Districts at 6 p.m. Monday at Midland Middle School, 6990 Warm Springs Road.

Voters will decide in the Nov. 6 election if the City Council has the authority to establish TADs, which are used to stimulate economic development, particularly in underdeveloped and blighted areas. Thanks to a Knight Foundation grant, the College of Business is providing the expertise to develop materials to give voters information about redevelopment powers and Tax Allocation Districts at these forums. OCT. 16 – Domestic Violence Awareness Week Presentation
A representative from Hope Harbour will give a presentation related to domestic violence awareness and prevention at noon Tuesday in the Davidson Student Center Columbus Room at CSU. Presented by CSU’s Women’s Advisory Council and Student Life, the event is free and open to the public and part of CSU’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities. OCT. 16 - ‘Lunch and Learn’ with Author Charles Shields
CSU Libraries will host a “Lunch and Learn” session with Charles Shields, author of “Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee,” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 in the Schwob Library. Shields will discuss his work on the life of Harper Lee, author of “To Kill A Mockingbird.” The event is part of Big Read, a Columbus Public Library initiative to encourage Columbus citizens to read “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Admission is free. OCT. 17-18 - Theatre-Student Performances to Highlight Domestic Violence Awareness
CSU theatre majors will perform monologues drawn from domestic violence incidents, facts and statistics at noon on both Wednesday and Thursday, Oct, 17-18 at CSU’s clock tower. Presented by CSU’s Women’s Advisory Council and Student Life, the event is free and open to the public and part of CSU’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities. OCT. 18 - Concert to Feature Pianist Jon Kimura Parker
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a chamber concert featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Jon Kimura Parker at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Parker, CSU’s 2005-2008 Dr. E. Stephen Purdom Distinguished Visiting Artist, will be accompanied by CSU professors Manuel Diaz , Andre Gaskins , Sergiu Schwartz and Lisa Oberlander . OCT. 19 – Midnight Madness to Open NCAA Basketball Season
CSU marks the beginning of the 2007-2008 basketball season with Midnight Madness on Friday, Oct. 19 in the Lumpkin Center. The doors open at 8:30 p.m., and festivities begin at 9 p.m. and include a CSU faculty-student basketball game, cheerleader squad performances, introductions of both the CSU men’s and women’s basketball squads and more. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors are CSU’s Student Activities Council, Student Athletic Advisory Committee and Athletics Department. OCT. 20 - CSU Jazz Band
The CSU Jazz Band will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre. Directed by professor Shirantha Beddage, the band’s repertoire ranges from contemporary jazz to traditional selections by pioneers such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington. General admission is free. CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a concert by guest flutist Carl Hall at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Hall serves on the Emory University music faculty and performs with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. General admission is free. OCT. 22 - Expert to Discuss U.S.-China ‘Energy Security and Climate Change’
Political Scientist Jean Garrison from the University of Wyoming will give a talk on “Energy Security as a Climate Change Issue: The Cases of China and the United States” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 in CSU’s International House at 6 Clearview Circle. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors are CSU’s Department of Environmental Science, Department of History and Geography and Department of Political Science.

Garrison will offer a broad set of regional, economic, and environmental contexts to the notion that the United States’ energy security dialogue should focus on the scarcity of oil and the threat posed by China’s recent efforts to buy up energy reserves around the world.
