OCT. 16-18 – NCAA Co-Ed Rifle Competition
Columbus State’s NCAA Division I Co-Ed Rifle squad will host and compete in the inaugural CSU Invitational Friday through Sunday at Fort Benning’s Army Marksmanship Unit. The daily competition begins 9 a.m. For more information, call 706-568-2204 or go to http://www.csucougars.com.

OCT. 17 – BLAST! Creators to Give Talk, Screen Their Documentary
The creators of BLAST!, a critically acclaimed documentary described as “astrophysics Indiana Jones style,” will discuss and screen their film starting 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 in the Omnisphere Theater at CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center. The presenters are Emmy-winning filmmaker Paul Devlin and his brother, Mark, a University of Pennsylvania cosmologist. The 74-minute film follows a team astrophysicists led by Mark Devlin as they attempt to investigate galaxy formation by launching a specially designed telescope with a NASA weather balloon. The event is free. But limited space —about 100 seats — means tickets must be acquired in advance from the center at 701 Front Ave., Columbus. OCT. 19 – International Film Series: Beat the Drum
Columbus State’s Center for International Education will screen the 2003 South African film Beat the Drum 7 p.m. Monday in the CSU International House Sara D. Spencer Event Hall. A winner of 30 festival awards around the world, the film follows the journey of a South African boy from his AIDS-ravaged village to the streets of Johannesburg. Taking along only a drum given to him by his father, the boy endures urban-culture shock as he seeks work and tries to locate his uncle. The program is free. For more information, call 706-565-4036.

OCT. 19-20 – Visiting Artist Lecture, Workshop: ‘Drive By Press’
Columbus State’s Department of Art will host artists Gregory Nanney and Joseph Velasquez, and their mobile printing press, “Drive By Press,” for a 7 p.m. lecture Monday, Oct. 19 in Carpenters Hall and an 11 a.m.-3 p.m. workshop Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the corner of Broadway and 10th St. outside RiverCenter. The artists, from Madison, Wis., are touring the country to educate the public about the creative and technical processes of printmaking. The programs are free, and visitors are invited to bring T-shirts for printing during the Tuesday workshop, or they can purchase commemorative T-shirts for the event. OCT. 20 – Author, Activist Ishmael Beah to Speak
Human rights activist Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, will give a talk related to the book at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 in Columbus State’s University Hall auditorium. In his book, Beah, 26, describes how he, as a 12-year-old in Sierra Leone, fled attacking rebels and wandered a land wrecked by violence. By 13, he’d been forced to serve in the government army and experience wartime violence. Eventually helped by a UNICEF rehabilitation center, he moved to the United States and completed a degree in political science. His lecture at CSU is free and open to the public. OCT. 20-NOV. 14 – Guest Artist Exhibition
Columbus State’s Department of Art will present “Truth in Tension,” paintings by Jered Sprecher, Oct. 20-Nov. 14 in the Corn Center for the Visual Arts’ Illges Gallery in downtown Columbus. A reception for Sprecher, from Knoxville, Tenn., is set for Oct. 30. Gallery admission is free. Fall semester hours are from noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday. OCT. 20 - Georgia Authors to Deliver ‘National Day on Writing’ Lecture
Columbus State will celebrate the National Day on Writing with presentations from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday by a pair of respected Georgia fiction writers in the Spencer Event Hall at CSU’s International House. The program is free. Authors Jamie Iredell and Man Martin will read from their recent works and discuss the related archival research process. Martin’s Days of the Endless Corvette earned him the 2008 Georgia Author of the Year from the Georgia Writers Association. Iredell’s Prose, Poems, a Novel, interweaves the chapbooks “Before I Moved to Nevada,” “When I Moved to Nevada,” and “Atlanta.” His writing also has appeared in The Chattahoochee Review. The National Day on Writing was established by the National Association of Teachers of English to draw attention to the variety of writing in everyday life. OCT 21 – NCAA Soccer

OCT. 22 – Groundbreaking for Student Recreation Center
A ceremonial groundbreaking for a 96,000-square foot Student Recreation Center is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 behind University Hall. Student fees are funding the $28 million facility that will be a major hub for student life. The center will include three baskeball courts, four volleyball courts, two racquetball courts, indoor rock climbing, fitness areas, a multi-purpose court, an indoor track, a ballroom, meeting rooms and offices. The building also will feature a 26,000 square foot aquatic center with a six-lane pool and diving board, a leisure pool, a “lazy river,” a sauna and 25-person whirlpool. OCT. 22 – Political Science Faculty Lecture to Address Immigration
Greg Domin, associate professor and chair of Columbus State’s Department of Political Science and MPA Program will give a talk titled “Not in my Backyard: Should Immigration be Curtailed in the United States,” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in the Spencer Event Hall at CSU’s International House. The program is free and opens the series “Twenty Years After the Wall: National Identity and the Future of Democracy in the Post-Cold War Era.” The program is free. OCT. 22 – Guest Artist Lecture: Sculptor Peter Dudek
Peter Dudek, an internationally known sculptor and curator in New York City, will give a talk titled “Dialogue Between Art and Architecture” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in Carpenters Hall, at 9th Street and Broadway on Columbus State’s RiverPark campus. Dudek’s works include “New Monuments to my Lovelife,” a recent site-specific installation in Brooklyn that consists of found materials and fabricated objects that he continually rearranges throughout the course of an exhibition.
