SEPT. 11-13 - Theatre Season Opener Señora Tortuga
Columbus State Theatre opens its 2009-2010 season with a family series production
of Señora Tortuga, concluding its opening weekend run at CSU Theatre on the Park Mainstage in downtown
Columbus. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2
p.m. Sunday. Roxanne Schroeder-Arce’s bilingual play is about a young boy and his
family who live in a barn on the Mexican border and have their lives changed by a
visiting and mysterious señora. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission, $5 for
senior citizens, children, active military personnel and CSU alumni. For the entire
production, CSU faculty and staff receive two complementary tickets and CSU students

SEPT. 12 - NCAA Women’s Soccer
Columbus State’s women’s soccer squad will host North Carolina Pembroke at 1 p.m.
Saturday at CSU’s Walden Soccer Complex. Admission prices are $5 for adults; $3 for
students/kids ; and free for ages 5 and under and with CSU ID. For more information,

SEPT. 13 - Clarinetist Derek Bermel to Perform
Clarinetist Derek Bermel, a composer-in-residence with CSU’s McCullers Center for
Writers and Musicians, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall.
Described by the Toronto Star as an “eclectic with wide open ears” and by the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette as “one of America’s finest young composers,” Bermel’s works draw from
a variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues, folk and
gospel. The concert also will feature performances by Schwob School of Music faculty
vocalist Michelle DeBruyn, the CSU Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Fred Cohen,
and a world premiere written by Bermel for the CSU Percussion Ensemble, directed by

SEPT. 14 - International Film Series: Soldier Child
Columbus State’s Center for International Education will screen the film Soldier
Child, at 7 p.m. Monday in the Spencer Event Hall in CSU’s International House at
University Avenue and Clearview Circle. The 1998 documentary, narrated by Danny Glover,
was filmed in northern Uganda and portrays the efforts to rehabilitate children who
have been abducted and forced into duty as “child soldiers.” The program is free.

SEPT. 15 - Joint Exhibitions Open Celebrating Lamar Dodd
Columbus State University and the W.C. Bradley Co. are collaborating to host exhibitions
from Sept. 15-Oct. 10 celebrating the work of one of Georgia’s most influential artists.
CSU will present “Drawings of Lamar Dodd,” in the Corn Center for the Visual Arts’
Illges Gallery, Meanwhile, the W.C. Bradley Co. Museum will feature “The Master of
Mood,” a survey of Dodd paintings depicting the different techniques and themes from
his work. Both sets of works are from the Athens, Ga.-based C.L. Morehead collection.
Dodd is noted for subjects ranging from Southern landscapes, city scenes and space
exploration to touching portraits and athletics at the University of Georgia, where
the Lamar Dodd School of Art represents his most visible legacy. The paintings can
be viewed noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday in the W.C. Bradley Co. Museum, 1017 Front Ave.,
Columbus. The Columbus State exhibition of Dodd’s drawings can be viewed noon-4 p.m.
Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in the Illges Gallery at 6 West 10th Street

SEPT. 17 - Constitution Day Programs
Columbus State’s political science department will stage programs to commemorate
Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 17. Assistant Professor of Political Science Troy
Vidal will give a keynote speech, “Federalist 10 and the U.S. Constitution: Madison’s
Bridging of Classical and Modern Political Thought,” at 12:30 p.m. in the Center for
Commerce and Technology auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Meanwhile, political science majors throughout the day will hand out pocket U.S. Constitutions
while supplies last. More information, including a series of video testimonials by

SEPT. 18, 20 - CSU to Host Soccer Invitational
Columbus State’s women’s soccer team will host an invitational involving NCAA men’s
and women’s teams from the Peach Belt, Sunshine, Gulf South and South Atlantic conferences
with a total of 10 matches on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 20 at the Walden Soccer
Complex. The schedule is:

• Friday - Harding vs North Georgia , 4 p.m.
• Friday - Tusculum vs Barry , 6 p.m.
• Friday - Georgia College and State vs. West Georgia , 7 p.m.
