Sept. 30, Oct. 2 - NCAA Women's Soccer: Hughston Sports Clinic Shootout
|Columbus State's women's soccer squad hosts the following matches as part of the annual Hughston Sports Clinic Shootout at CSU's Walden Soccer Complex:

Sept. 30 - Writing Fellow Reception at McCullers Center
Columbus State's Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians hosts a reception for David Samuel Levinson at 7 p.m. Friday at the McCullers House, 1519 Stark Avenue. Oct. 1 - Oxbow Meadows-Lynn Haven Garden Club Program

Oct. 1 - Gallery Reception for Artist Mike Howard
Columbus State's Department of Art presents a reception for the opening of Crossing the Bridge: Paintings of Life and Death by Phenix City native Mike Howard, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Corn Center for Visual Arts' Illges Gallery. The exhibit, through Oct. 22, features a series depicting "The Assassination of Albert Patterson," referring to the Alabama attorney general who was immortalized in the film The Phenix City Story. The reception will feature commentary from Howard, a fixture of the New York City art scene, and curator Fred Fussell. The gallery is located at 6 West 10th Street. Enter on Front Avenue. Oct. 1 - Kansas Performs with the CSU Philharmonic
The Schwob School of Music's CSU Philharmonic Orchestra joins the classic rock group Kansas live in concert 7:30 p.m. Saturday in RiverCenter's Heard Theatre. The concert is part of Kansas' 2011 Collegiate Symphony Tour. Tickets are $26.50 for rear balcony, $36.50 for middle balcony and $46.50 for orchestra seats. Oct. 2 - Flute Studio Recital
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music presents a performance by the CSU Flute Studio 4 p.m. Sunday in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. The recital features chamber music for ensembles and flutes of all sizes. Recent guest artists at the Atlanta Flute Club Fair, the CSU Flute Studio is directed by professor Andrée Martin. Oct. 4-22 – Exhibition: Mike Howard's 'Crossing the Bridge'
Columbus State's Department of Art presents Crossing the Bridge: Paintings of Life and Death by Mike Howard Oct. 4-22 in the Corn Center for Visual Arts' Illges Gallery. Curated by Fred Fussell, the display includes "The Assassination of Albert Patterson" – the Alabama attorney general immortalized in the film The Phenix City Story about organized crime that overran the city in 1950s. Other works depict the assassinations of John Lennon, Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, plus the 1940 pickaxe murder in Mexico of exiled Soviet political figure Leon Trotsky and the 1983 killing of subway graffiti artist Michael Stewart by transit officers in a New York City subway. Oct. 4 – Guest Speaker to Discuss 'Europe's New Right'
Columbus State's Center for International Education presents "Europe's New Right ," a lecture by guest political science professor William Downs, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 in the Spencer Event Hall of the International House. Downs is associate dean for social and behavioral sciences at Georgia State University. His lecture is free and open to the public. Oct. 6 – CSU Wind Ensemble
Columbus State's Schwob School of Music presents the CSU Wind Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 in RiverCenter's Legacy Hall. Entitled Metamorphosis, the concert begins with John Adams' minimalist work "Short Ride in a Fast Machine"and closes with Hindemith's orchestral masterwork "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber." Oct. 7 - Panel Discussion on Civil War in the Valley
Columbus State University Continuing Education presents a panel discussion, "Remembering the War in the Valley, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. Panelists for this free program will include David Williams, author of Rich Man's War: Class, Caste, and Confederate Defeat in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley; Billy Winn, writer and local historian; and staff from the Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum. Discussion will cover how the Civil War impacted area soldiers and their families, how a large portion of Columbus was destroyed and how the military industries boomed around this time to support the production of uniforms, guns, ammunition and more. The audience also will hear details of an interpretive park planned for Columbus-Phenix City to commemorate the Civil War. Columbus State's Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center presents "Greening Your House" for its next Second Sunday series program at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the center, 3535 South Lumpkin Road. Local residents Rick and Marquette McKnight will lead the program as they describe their recent eco-friendly home-building project. Participants will be entered into a drawing for green gifts including a programmable thermostat. Admission is $3 and free for kids 3 and younger.
