JULY 3-7 - SUMMER CAMP CATERS TO ASPIRING ASTRONAUTS
Columbus State Universitys Coca-Cola Space Science Center will stage the summer camp So You Want to be an Astronaut? 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the center, located 701 Front Ave., Columbus. Traditionally one of the centers most popular summer camps, activities will include Challenger flight missions and robotics exploration. Participants, from grades 3-4, also will design aliens and build and launch rockets among other activities.

JULY 4 - CSU TO CLOSE FOR HOLIDAY
Columbus State University will close Tuesday for the Fourth of July holiday and reopen for classes and all business operations on Wednesday.

July 6 - ORIENTATION FOR NONTRADITIONAL FRESHMEN, TRANSFERS
Columbus State University will stage an orientation Thursday for nontraditional freshman and transfer students entering CSU this fall. Check-in is 8-8:30 a.m. in the Davidson Student Center.

This event is required for nontraditional freshmen, who are students away from school more than five years. Meanwhile, transfer students also are encouraged to participate in this orientation that covers campus resources, academic policies, procedures, academic myths and expectations. Participants also will meet current students and with an academic adviser to discuss curriculum requirements and course registration.

This orientation will repeat Aug. 10. The cost is $35 per student and $15 per guest with advance registration. An extra $25 will be charged for same-day registration on site. JULY 7 - ORIENTATION FOR TRADITIONAL FRESHMEN
Columbus State University will hold orientation Friday, July 7 for new students enrolling for fall 2006 who have recently graduated from high school and will not be living in university housing. Check-in will be 8-9 a.m. at Fine Arts Hall. Programs begin at 9 a.m. in the Fine Arts Hall auditorium and will conclude about 3 p.m. The orientation covers campus resources, academic policies, procedures, academic myths and expectations. Participants also will meet current students and with an academic adviser to discuss curriculum requirements and course registration.

JULY 9 - OXBOW MEADOWS TO HOST ANNUAL INSECT FESTIVAL
Columbus State Universitys Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will hold its eighth annual Insectival, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 9.

The following events and attractions will highlight the afternoon:

  • Roach races featuring Oxbow's Madagascar hissing cockroaches
  • Cricket-spitting contests
  • Insect treats including chocolate-covered crickets, and seasoned mealworms
  • Honey extraction demonstrations
  • Insect exhibitions and demonstrations
  • Crafts, games, a scavenger hunt and insect tattoos for children
  • Refreshments on sale
