MARCH 29-APRIL 1 - SHAKESPEARE COMEDY OPENS NEW THEATRE
Columbus State University is staging its first theatre production this weekend in the new CSU Theatre on the Park in downtown Columbus. Curtain times for the Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The 350-seat venue is a centerpiece of CSU’s new riverfront complex. While the venue will be showcased in full starting in the fall when all the kinks are worked out, theatre-goers can get a first look at the new spaces during the upcoming shows. Admission prices for this “PG-13” production are $15 per adult, $13 per child, senior citizen, active military and CSU alumni, and free for CSU faculty, staff and students. MARCH 30 – JAZZ CLINICS, CONCERT TO FEATURE RICHARD DEROSA
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present New York based drummer, composer and educator Richard De Rosa on Friday in a pair of clinics and a performance with the CSU Jazz Band.

DeRosa, who has written for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, will direct the clinics, “The Musical Jazz Drummer,” 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in RiverCenter room 1715 and “Jazz Improvisation” from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in room 1717. Both are free and open to musicians of all skill levels.

At 7:30 p.m., DeRosa and the CSU Jazz Band will perform in the Studio Theatre. Guest artists, guitarist Robert Orr of Auburn and bassist Marc Miller of Atlanta, will join in the performance. MARCH 31 – STUDENT GROUP TO STAGE INAUGURAL PET SHOW
CSU’s Pre-Veterinary Medical Association, a student organization, will host a pet show, from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at the CSU Intramural Field and Pavilion, next to the International House at University Avenue and Clearview Circle. The event is billed as “a fun afternoon of contests, food, and prizes,” and guests can enter pets in contests featuring talent, costume, owner-pet look-alike and best in show categories. APRIL 2-5 – CSU TO HOST WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SPEAKER SERIES
CSU’s Women’s Issues Advisory Council, in conjunction with the Association of University Women, is sponsoring a Women’s Leadership series of lectures Monday through Thursday in the Davidson Student Center. The series, targeting future leaders among young women, will feature the following speakers, from noon to 1 p.m. each day:

• Monday: Sheree Mitchell, founder of The Growing Room Child Development Centers, Columbus room
• Tuesday: Audrey Tillman, senior vice president and director of human resources for Aflac’s Facilities and Health Services, room 258
• Wednesday: Mara Scrupe, CSU professor and art department chair as the F. Rothschild Endowed Chair of Art, Columbus room
• Thursday: Lori Quinlan, area manager for Georgia Power, room 254

APRIL 2 – INTERNATIONAL FILM SERIES TO FEATURE “GLEANERS AND I”
CSU’s Center for International Education will screen the 2000 French documentary “Gleaners and I” at 7 p.m. Monday, April 2 in the International House at 6 Clearview Circle. The film examines France’s poor and frugal, who practice gleaning, the term for picking remains from previously harvested fields. APRIL 2 – GUITAR AND VOICE STUDIO RECITAL
CSU’s Schwob School of Music will present a Guitar and Voice Studio Recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 2 in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. APRIL 5 – LIBRARY TO HOST CHILDREN’S BOOK READ-OUT
CSU Libraries and the Hunter Lecture Committee is hosting a “My Favorite Children’s Book Read-Out,” from noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5 on the Schwob Library main floor. The event is in conjunction with the April 10 Hunter Lecture appearance by author and storyteller Carmen Deedy. Faculty, staff and students can participate by e-mailing a proposed book title to mcginnis_callie@ColumbusState.edu by 5p.m. Tuesday. Each reader will have about five minutes to read from and comment on his or her favorite book.

APRIL 5 – WORKSHOP AND READING BY POET J. ALLYN ROSSER
CSU’s Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians and the Georgia Poetry Circuit will feature award-winning poet J. Allyn Rosser in a pair of programs on Thursday, April 5. Rosser, who has won the Crab Orchard Award and Morse Poetry Prize, will give a workshop at 4 p.m. in the Smith-McCullers House, 1519 Stark Ave. At 7:30 p.m., she will perform a formal reading in the International House at 6 Clearview Circle. APRIL 5 – HISTORY SERIES TO FEATURE FORT BENNING
CSU’s interpretive history series “Red Clay, White Water and Blues” continues with a program about Fort Benning, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5 at the Columbus Museum. Ken Thomas, retired historian with the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, will talk about the “prehistory” of Fort Benning and its effect on local families. Also, retired Col. John Mitchell will discuss Fort Benning’s future expansion and its anticipated regional impact. On Saturday, April 7 the program will continue, as a bus will depart the Columbus Public Library at 10 a.m. for a tour of the old and new Fort Benning infantry museums.
