MARCH 31 SCHOLASTIC HONORS CONVOCATION

MARCH 31 ASIAN NIGHT TO SHOWCASE JAPAN CULTURE
Columbus State University students from Japan, with visiting high school students from Kiryu, Japan, will stage Asian Night at 7 p.m. Friday in CSUs International House at 6 Clearview Circle. The students will demonstrate calligraphy and origami and showcase Japanese fashions such as yukata . The program also will feature food and activities organized by the CSU Japanese students. The event is free and open to the public.

The 10 Kiryu students, with a chaperone, are on a March 26-through-April 4 Columbus visit, sponsored by Aflac and coordinated by CSUs Center for International Education and the Columbus Mayors Commission on International Relations and Cultural Liaison Encounters. APRIL 1 - NCAA SOFTBALL: CSU TO HOST USC UPSTATE
The Columbus State University softball squad will host USC Upstate for a doubleheader starting 1 p.m. Saturday at Lady Cougar Field. APRIL 1 - PREMIER SERIES: ROB KAPILOWS WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?
Rob Kapilow will conduct the Miami String Quartet and CSU faculty pianist Betty Anne Daz in a performance of the popular What Makes It Great? program at 10 a.m. Saturday in the RiverCenters Legacy Hall. Kapilow, nationally renowned as a composer and conductor, debuted What Makes It Great? on National Public Radio more than a decade ago. In the program, Kapilow breaks the music down in a listener-friendly way pulling themes apart and guiding listeners through the maze of melodies and concludes with a complete performance of the work. APRI, 1-6 LATIN AMERICAN AWARENESS WEEK
Latin American Awareness Week at Columbus State University, will feature an April 1-6 series of public events to expose the greater Columbus community to various aspects of Latin America. The following programs are free and open to the public:

• Saturday: LATIN AMERICAN EDUCATION FORUM, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Center for Commerce and Technology room 205. Event will cover opportunities for student support and higher education preparation, and guidelines for educators to better meet Latino-student needs. APRIL 3 - INTERNATIONAL FILM SERIES TO FEATURE ONCE WERE WARRIORS
Columbus State Universitys Center for International Education will screen the 1994 film Once Were Warriors, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 3 in CSUs International House at 6 Clearview Circle. The film depicts an urban New Zealand family, descended from Maori warriors, whose members are burdened by a violent father and the societal problems of being treated as outcasts. APRIL 3-MAY 11 - CERAMICS INVITATIONAL
The Columbus State University Department of Art will host a ceramics invitational exhibition April 3 through May 11 in the Fine Arts Hall gallery. The exhibition, titled Approaches to Utility, will feature artists from different regions of the United States: Allegheny Meadows , Frank Martin and Mary Louise Carter . APRIL 3 - PREMIER SERIES: JON KIMURA PARKER AND CSU PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Pianist Jon Kimura Parker and the CSU Philharmonic Orchestra, with guest conductor David Lockington, will perform in a CSU Premier Series concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 3 in the RiverCenters Bill Heard Theatre. Parker is the E. Stephen Purdom Distinguished Visiting Artist with the Schwob School of Music. An encore of this performance will take place the following evening at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta . APRIL 4 - FACULTY RESEARCH FORUM: THE NEW SOUTH AND LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES
CSU Libraries will feature a pair of presentations as part of its Universitywide Faculty Research Forum series, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 in the Schwob Library. The presentations will be Imagining the New South: Postcards and Memory in the Southern Urban Landscape by library science Professor and Archivist Reagan Grimsley and Interaction, Language Topology and Second Language Learning by linguistics Professor K. Seon Jeon.

Using early 20th-century postcards, Grimsley will demonstrate how the post-1865 urban landscape of the American South changed dramatically in terms of railroads, skyscrapers, industrial sites and new architectural styles. He will focus particularly on the newly developing urban areas of Mississippis piney woods and coastal region.

Jeon will describe how second or foreign languages are acquired, including the relationship between conversational interaction and second language development, and the role of language typology in second language acquisition.

April 5 - POETRY READING TO FEATURE LARISSA SZPORLUK
Columbus State Universitys Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will host a poetry reading by award-winning poet Larissa Szporluk at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5 in CSUs International House at 6 Clearview Circle. The event, in celebration of National Poetry Month, is free and open to the public.

Szporluk has published three books of poetry: Dark Sky Question , winner of the Barnard New Women Poets Prize; Isolato , winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize; and The Wind, Master Cherry, the Wind . A creative writing and literature professor at Bowling Green State University, her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry, Best of Beacon, New American Voices and Young American Poets.

APRIL 6 - CERAMICS INVITATIONAL GUEST ARTIST LECTURE, RECEPTION
Alleghany Meadows, a studio potter from Carbondale, Colo., will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 6 in the Center for Commerce and Technology room 237. Meadows, who has studied and practiced his craft in Japan and Nepal, is a featured artist in the April 3-May 11 Approaches to Utility ceramics invitational exhibition.

APRIL 6 - WIND ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM
