OCT. 9 - OXBOW MEADOWS: SPECTACULAR SPIDERS Columbus State Universitys Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will present Spectacular Spiders as part of its Second Sunday series, from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday. The program will uncover secrets of spiders as part of a demonstration of local species. The cost of the program is $1 and free for children age 4 and younger. OCT. 10-11 - CUNNINGHAM CENTERS FIRST MAJOR CONFERENCE TARGETS PROFESSIONAL WOMEN

• First Major Conference to be Staged at Cunningham Center
• Presentations and Workshops Offer Regions Top Women Executives
• Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin to be Available to the Media, noon-12:30 p.m. Tuesday
• Individual Tickets Available for Keynote Presentations

Columbus State Universitys Cunningham Center for Leadership Development will host Womens Development Conference: Skills, Strategies and Inspiration for the 21st Century, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11. The event is designed for women who aspire to develop skill sets that will move them toward their career goals and increase their value in the corporate world. The conference also marks the Cunningham Centers first major professional development event since the center officially opened in June.

Opening registration is from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Monday. The event concludes the following day with a 4:20-5 p.m. panel discussion moderated by retired Synovus Senior Vice President Nancy Buntin. In between, the event will feature the following speakers: entrepreneur and author Carol Gardner , Columbus Bank and Trust President and CEO Steve Melton and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin .

For those not registering for the entire conference, individual tickets are available for both the 7 p.m. Monday dinner banquet featuring Carol Gardners keynote speech and the 12:30 p.m. Tuesday luncheon and address by Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. The conferences overall, $349 fee covers all workshops, meals and materials.

Additional speakers, on the opening day, will include Linda Hadley, Ph.D., dean of CSUs D. Abbott Turner College of Business and Nancy Johnson, administrative director of the John B, Amos Cancer Center . Other local experts will direct the following workshops:

• Conflict Management: Strategies That Work, by Kathelen Amos, Aflac Foundation president
• Youre Taking Care of Everyone Else, Whos Taking Care of You? by Beth Bussey, John B. Amos Cancer Center clinical nutritionist
• Developing 21st Century Leadership Skills, by Deborah Lane, retired Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Georgia chief human resource counsel
• Time/Life Management, by Audrey Tillman . The event will feature the University System of Georgia's engineering transfer program as well as technological and engineering study programs at regional institutions, including Columbus State University, Georgia Tech, Southern Polytechnic State and CTC. The event is free and co-sponsored by CSU, CTC and the Columbus Chapter of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.   OCT. 13-14, 17-18 - SILENT ART AUCTION TO SUPPORT HURRICANE RELIEF Columbus State University's Department of Art will host a silent art auction to support CSUs hurricane relief fund, on Thursday and Friday and Oct. 17-18. The auction, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in the Fine Arts Hall foyer, will include works donated by artists both internationally recognized and local, including CSU art faculty and students. Media will include painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, photography and drawing. A closing reception at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 in the foyer, will take place jointly with the previously scheduled reception for the Oct. 10-Dec. 8 exhibition, Conduit: Mapping the Connections Between Art and Science in the Fine Arts Hall Gallery.

  CSU, with more than $11,000 already raised for hurricane relief, will direct all auction proceeds to the Red Cross. For more information, call 568-2047.

  OCT. 14 - CSU CHAMBER WINDS Columbus State Universitys Schwob School of Music will present a concert by the CSU Chamber Winds at 5:30 p.m. Friday In the RiverCenters Studio Theatre. Billed as a terrific pre-dinner concert, the event will feature large chamber wind works by Beethoven, Dvorak, Stravinsky and others. General admission is $5.
