Student, community events mark Columbus State’s monthlong Black History Month observance

February 2, 2023

Black History Month | Black History Month is a celebration to commemorate the achievements of African-American blacks in the history of the United States

Throughout February, Columbus State University will host an array of student and community events celebrating Black History Month and honoring the contributions of African Americans to the university, our community and our nation. Several events include opportunities for the community to participate.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history, according to HISTORY. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

CSU’s Diversity Programs & Services, registered student organizations, Greek letter organizations belonging to the National Panhellenic Council, and various academic units have partnered to offer events to benefit students and the broader Chattahoochee Valley Community.

Looking ahead, Columbus State’s Diversity Programs & Services will host its annual Diversity Forum on March 29-30 on its Main Campus. The two-day event will highlight issues of diversity, poverty and inequality. It begins Wednesday evening with the Legacy Dinner Celebration and Awards featuring civil rights leader and broadcaster Xernona Clayton. It continues Thursday with various professional development sessions around the theme of “Plugging into DEI” and will include lunchtime remarks by local DEI advocate Jo Anne Hill.
