COLUMBUS, GA. - As predicted, the fall 2003 class at Columbus State University has again set a record as the largest in its history with an enrollment expected to reach more than 6,800.

Final numbers won't be reported to the state until October, but university officials predict an increase of more than 550 students over last year's record enrollment of 6,250. That represents an increase of almost 9 percent. About 1,000 students are in the university's graduate programs.

There are many reasons that could be attributed to the increase, including those outside of CSU's control, such as the economy. But university official say there are plenty of reasons on campus that also have contributed to the ongoing success, including: a growing reputation of the university; successful graduates who are spreading the word of their satisfaction with CSU; effective recruiting, especially in areas such as Atlanta; productive partnerships with the community and local businesses; and faculty members, new and experienced, who are dedicated to effective teaching.

Many of the Atlanta students who are attracted to CSU come because of its combination of a quality education and attractive student housing. On-campus housing has forced a long waiting list, even with CSU now offering residential housing for about 800 students around main campus and in Uptown Columbus. Next fall, a new housing complex should be open near Courtyard 1 to add 144 beds, with another 144 beds planned for fall 2005.
