Four join College of Letters & Sciences faculty

Columbus State University’s College of Letters & Sciences welcomes four new faculty to its teaching ranks as the university begins the 2023-24 academic year. They are among the 17 new faculty joining the university faculty.
“The College of Letters & Sciences is pleased to announce our newest faculty and welcome them to Columbus State University,” said the college’s dean Dr. Annice Yarber-Allen. “They have outstanding academic and research credentials that will expand our programs and further enhance student learning and community engagement.”
Department of Earth & Space Sciences
Qi Zou, Ph.D. begins his tenure this fall as an assistant professor in the Department of Earth & Space Sciences' Robotics Engineering Program. Zou received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and automation, and
his master’s degree in mechanical design and theory from Beijing Jiaotong University.
He earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering from York University. Before joining
Columbus State, he was a postdoctoral fellow in electrical and electronic engineering
at Hanyang University. His research fields and teaching interests include parallel
robotics, medical robotics, mechatronics, solid mechanics, linkage mechanisms and
innovative mechanical design.
Department of English
Daewoo Jin, Ph.D. begins his tenure this fall as an assistant professor in the Department of English. He holds a bachelor of business administration from the National Central University
(Taiwan), a master of arts in English language teaching materials development from
the International Graduate School of English (Seoul, Korea), and a doctorate in composition
and applied linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His previous teaching
experience includes appointments at the University of Montana, the U.S. Army John
F. Kennedy Special Warfare School, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His teaching
will focus on first-year composition courses at CSU.
Department of History, Geography & Philosophy
Laura June Davis, Ph.D. begins her tenure this fall as an assistant professor in the Department of History, Geography & Philosophy. She holds a bachelor of arts in history from Cornell University, a master of science
in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a master of
arts in history from George Mason University, and a doctorate in history from the
University of Georgia. She comes to Columbus State from Southern Utah University,
where she was an associate professor of history. Her teaching will focus on American
history through the 19th century, with an emphasis on gender, identity, community
and the military.
Department of Psychology
John Cumming IV, Ph.D. begins his full-time tenure as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology after teaching previously as a part-time instructor. He holds a bachelor’s in psychology
with a minor in anthropology from Jacksonville State University, and both a master’s
and doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of Toledo. In addition
to Columbus State, his previous teaching experience includes service to the University
of Toledo. His teaching at CSU will continue to focus on scientific inquiry, neuroscience,
perception and learning.
