Kids' Summer Camp Options Abundant at CSU

COLUMBUS, Ga.—Memorial Day weekend is a summer gateway that leaves many parents faced with the age-old quest of occupying their child’s time with fun activities that also keep the mind active.

For families with summer-agenda space to fill, CSU Continuing Education is targeting different age groups with more than 60 camps.

Camps will be available through early August and focus on science, math, environment, computers, languages, the arts, and several sports.

Spaces are available for programs next week , including basketball fundamentals and tennis , soccer and Land of the Pharaohs . Meanwhile, the Art Explorers “Beach Party” camp , also next week and at the Rankin Arts Center is near capacity.

Other camps near capacity include:

• Sci-Fi Movie Makers , June 18-22
• So You Want to be an Astronaut , June 11-15 and July 16-20
• Medieval Times, June 18-22
• Treasure Island, June 25-29

The latter two programs, and Land of the Pharaohs, are part of a new adventure series titled “Catch the Summer Express” for ages 7-10 at the Turner Center. Participants in these camps will experience life in different times and places. Imagine stepping into a storybook to explore Sherwood Forest in the time of Robin Hood and meet other characters from his world. Other camps in this series include Mystical Isles of Mythology which will feature ancient Greece and Rome, and South of the Border which will explore the lives of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans. Campers will stage their own Cinco de Mayo festival and experience food prepared by guest chefs, among various activities.

A new set of technology offerings at CSU’s Center for Commerce and Technology includes Mission Technology that will guide participants in creating interactive stories, games, music and art on the computer. Also, Computer Quest , covers 3-D interactive animation and robotics for campers, grades 6-9. This camp also is nearing enrollment capacity.

Camps already full include several from the Rankin’s Art Explorers series for kindergarten-grade 2 campers: Beach Party Books and Bugs .

Also filled is Fashion Girlz ; however space remains for Fashion Modelz for ages 10-19. Both, at the Turner Center, also are new offerings. The latter will feature New York fashion modeling tips, runway choreography and the photo shoot, and is geared toward mainstream, plus-sized, and even male models.

Such debut offerings complement traditional favorites staged at the Turner Center and by CSU’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center, the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, Columbus Regional Mathematics Collaborative and the Athletics Department.

CSU’s summer camp selection even caters to newborns , with a set of July 23-27 Kindermusik programs.
